New thread- miscellaneous but interesting articles « Result #2 Yesterday at 9:46am »
This is an interesting piece written by Jonathan Coe on his love of Virago books - it's old but encapsulates that thrill of finding a book by a particular publisher, easily identifiable by spine e.g. Picador 70's books (now the book could just as easily be Bridget Jones's Diary as say...Trout Fishing in America). Anway, I digress....
My phone's playing-up, so I'm having trouble texting to find out, so what's all this I hear from Reuben about Rumiko Jr being in the Hastings Observer's Top 10 Gigs of the Year?
Ok, not just gigs, but Top Ten Shows Of 2009 (not in any order):
Rob Brydon, White Rock Theatre. Rumiko Jr & Regular John, Smugglers. Tinchy Stryder, Vibes, St Mary In The Castle. Jim Jeffries, Venuu. Ash, The Crypt. Drop Dead Dolls Burlesk, Venuu. The Show 2009, Reach Out & Give, White Rock Theatre. Jaguar Skills, The Crypt. Heritage Orchestra, De La Warr Pavilion. The Chapman Brothers, Hastings Museum & Art Gallery.
An interesting, varied mix (weighted more towards the end of the year), and, quite possibly, put together from several staff members' favourites. Not sure exactly which Smugglers gig they're thinking of, but I'd assume it was one of the 'closing down' events (maybe the 26th June gig?)

Morning, Hope everyone's having a good Christmas.
My phone's playing-up, so I'm having trouble texting to find out, so what's all this I hear from Reuben about Rumiko Jr being in the Hastings Observer's Top 10 Gigs of the Year?
Which gig?
[By the way, Michael should now have a burnt CD of the first Donkey Kong EPs off of me; and Carolyn gave me some computer software for Xmas that will enable us to convert all our old vinyl & tapes to mp3, if anyone's got anything they're desperate to have in digital format.]

By the by, Richard mentions the above interview again in the current issue of Pantograph #12, along with a photo he's lifted from Facebook of me in Noeleen's flat on my birthday this year. It's quite a murky picture in the colour-printed issues, so I'll probably just be a silhouette in the photocopied ones for the record shops.

Re: Noise Annoys « Result #11 on Dec 23, 2009, 1:10pm »
I thought Sunn O))) had permenantly buggered up my hearing the other weekend at ATP. When I got back to the chalet the noise (howling and whistling) in my ears was almost exactly the same as when I was in the venue with the band playing - it was quite scary. But then when I woke up they were fine. Odd.

Re: Ongoing De La Warr Pavilion thread - « Result #18 on Dec 15, 2009, 7:11pm »
Right then, that's Speech Debelle/Micachu & The Shapes, and now Vampire Weekend confirmed for the De La Warr in the spring (along with The Leisure Society, a promising Portico Quartet/Sweet Billy Pilgram gig, and Hastings' semi-own Acoustic Ladyland), plus Simon Bookish for Feb's Random Friday.
There's another decent gig lined-up for the spring too, which they've not announced yet - but it's on the same sort of lines & level as those mentioned above (and some of the previous De La Warr gigs). Any guesses (except for Carolyn, and possibly Reuben, who may already know...)?

Just bumping this OLD thread about The Rooms (still thriving despite our initial reservations, eh?) 'cos I was just on the phone to Rob there, and he's got a few spare gig slots for January if anyone fancies playing (he even asked me) as well as a live band vacancy on New Year's Eve. 01424 713555
(There's a different new website now too, but I think it's virussey at the moment, so maybe check things out on the MySpace instead www.myspace.com/theroomscafebarstudios)
(And no, I can't remember who I was referring to at the end of the previous post on this thread. Tara, probably)
The short film our friends Vicky and George (The Garden Films) made of White Night, which Carolyn & I submitted footage and photos for, is showing in the 1-2pm programme at the Sallis Benney Theatre on Sun 6th Dec, by the way. We've not seen it yet, but Vicky mentioned online that it's completed.
Now on YouTube (that's Transformer's Cinema Car on the soundtrack) and worth five minutes of your time.

Here's both killer ATP line-ups for the next two weekends. Hopefully I'll make it to MBV later this afternoon, and then be back for 10 Years the following week. Crazily, MBV played a public warm-up show on site yesterday evening, which, coupled with the In Between Days events in Butlins between the weekends, means some (any?) lucky punters are having an epic 12 day/11 night festival...

Here's my Ragged Trousered Hedonist guest blog (it's true, I do have ragged trousers). As most of you know, the phone app mentioned is the free one over at the www.on-uk.com site. It got edited down, but I had included the point that anyone can add their events info the the app free-of-charge on that site, if you want to give it a go anytime. All the public submissions just get checked-over for accuracy by me or Adam and that lot at the office before they go live.
Worth noting: Hastings Observer's new The Ragged Trousered Hedonist ents blogger, Rob Alderson. He's offering space for plugs below his column.
I'm lined-up to guest edit this column next week, so make sure people let me know if they've got events coming up during Dec 4th-10th.
It's an online-only column, so hopefully the industry stories that local paper publishers Johnston Press are gonna start trialing some of their titles' sites pay-only as of next week don't apply to the Observer yet!

Google Wave's really not doing it for me so far. All the start-up info is in video tutorials, none of which I can watch because (depite trying it out in Internet Explorer and Safari, installing Google Chrome Frame and various Adobe Flash & Shockwave things) I still get 'The required plugin is not installed' messages.

I've got Google Wave now Neil - I was worried it would alter the layout of the laptop view and toolbars, but it hasn't, which is good.
At the moment I've got no idea what to do with it though! I'm sure in a month or two we'll all be dabbling with it, but at the moment it's just... there.

Did anyone watch School Of Saatchi when it started last night? Next Monday's show is all about constructing large artworks on Hastings seafront (you may have seen the trailer).
This completely passed me by in reality. Didn't even notice the Hastings Observer pick up on it. Does anyone know when the artworks and filming were actually done (assuming, from the trailers & press photos, that it can't be happening right now)?

Does installing the Google Chrome Frame bit first make much difference to how your computer runs? I really didn't like all those toolbars etc that Google keep trying to add to the laptop, so I'm wary about swamping it with more add-on nonsense.

CineCity is underway in Brighton again (17th Nov - 6th Dec). They've already shown the new Jim Jarmusch and Jean-Pierre Jeunet (Amelie) films, but there's plenty of stuff to come that might be worth making the trip for, especially ones with Q&As afterwards, including The Road (John Hillcoat & Nick Cave), Bronco Bullfrog etc.
If you pick up the physical programme in Brighton at any point, you'll see Carolyn & I are thanked again, I think for our help in setting up CineCity's involvement with the White Night Festival last month (swimming in the Prince Regent while they worked out safe lighting levels to project films at the pool, and distributing the ATP posters).
The short film our friends Vicky and George (The Garden Films) made of White Night, which Carolyn & I submitted footage and photos for, is showing in the 1-2pm programme at the Sallis Benney Theatre on Sun 6th Dec, by the way. We've not seen it yet, but Vicky mentioned online that it's completed.

there is a problem with the itunes download, there are lots of silent glitches in the tracks. Marcus you should probably re-upload it. I emailed Apple about it.
The only thing that I wasn't sure about was the vocal techniques that several artists used - a kind of fake language. Stu - what was the technique called?
My mind's gone blank on this actually.

I really like this video of our friends The Dan Markland Band (on Richard's Overhead Wires label) - Just a short compilation of gig/rehearsal/travel moments, but it really makes being young and in a band look like the best idea ever.
Am looking forward to it arriving this week, hopefully.
Probably not: Amazon have emailed their standard 'awaiting stock' message. Delayed, I think, 'cos Warp might have shifted the release date back to honour their promise that customers ordering direct from the Warp Film Store would get theirs first.

Best film probably 24 Hour Party People - it's certainly the one I've watched the most. When I first saw it I wanted to go straight back into the next viewing.

Digital is loud! Apart from a lot of the Bad Lieutenant album (most of which sounded like the more guitarry Electronic songs, unsuprisingly), we got a small handful of New Order (Waiting For The Sirens Call, Crystal), an Electronic song (fans' favourite Tighten Up), a Joy Division encore (Transmission) and even the Barney/Chemical Brothers collaboration (Out Of Control, which segued into Temptation).

Finally saw the ATP Film at the weekend - lots and lots of fun and nonsense. No sign of anyone we know (not us, our friends, bands we met, label owners, etc) from any of the Camber events in the film, perhaps suprisingly. But there is a lot of Camber stuff for nostalgic purposes (the rest is all Minehead, nothing from any of the US or Australian events, or indeed any other non-festival ATP gigs). DVD out soon anyway, which I'll pre-order, if anyone wants to watch it.
