Back on the occasional subject of old, locally-shot episodes of Doctor Who...
HMV have a sale on most Dr Who dvds at the moment, and I used up the end of my gift card & a bit on my credit card to get a dvd copy of 'The Curse Of Fenric' (the Sylvester McCoy/Nicholas Parsons/vampires/World War Two one), which was predominantly shot on location fairly nearby, around both Crowborough and Hawkhurst. There's also some beach scenes in it, which were filmed in Dorset. However, it turns out (I didn't know this) that they were originally planned to be shot below the cliffs in Hastings*. One of the extras on the dvd includes some handheld camera footage of the Production Crew making preliminary visits to the planned locations, and there's a nice bit of them all stuck at the far end of the car park at Rock-a-Nore on a piss-awful Winter's day, watching the high tide smash against the rocks and realising that there's no way the beach is gonna be either safe or suitable for filming on (the production called for the landing of dinghies, and scenes shot in and under the water). Hastings duly abandoned! You can't blame them in that weather...
[*As seen on the cover of Drowning By The Sea, of course.]

I've only seen him act in that short film where he knocks Tracey Emin about: I'm not sure that's quite what the BBC would be after...
Swapping the Police Box for his boneshaker would cut the budget usefully though.

It's The Scottish Falsetto Sock-Puppet Theatre's version of Planet Of The Dead - a bit like a cross between Donald & Davy Stott and Zig & Zag...

Nice Mark Gatiss documentary on Target's Dr Who books, on Radio 4 i>Player for a week. Meanwhile, rumours of all 11 Doctor Who actors (inclucing the new one and the deceased ones) appearing in this year's Children In Need special. So long as it's better than that East Enders one...

Oh, and the final Patrick Troughton Dr Who story The War Games came out on dvd this week: filmed (as I've mentioned before) over the Cuckmere Valley, Birling Manor etc (there's a location feature on the 3rd disc). Probably the best 'old' Dr Who dvd release yet for bonus content: highly recommended.

That's a fantastic idea (it's mooted for one of the spin-off books only) - Big boost for both BBC Books and Moorcock, probably. In other news: BBC strikes deal with YouTube to show old (60s-80s) Dr Who stories, see them hereEDIT: Actually, this might be non-UK only. Nick, can you see them?

2010 series trailerJust been looking at some Dr Who forums, by the way. If you watched the last David Tennant episode yesterday, who would you say the mysterious older lady (Claire Bloom) who kept appearing to Bernard Cribbins, and then turned up again towards the end, was? I mean, your (and probably my) obvious gut reaction, and not the thoughts of weird internet fans?

Hey, I've been out the country, so I missed any previews/comments online or in the Radio Times and stuff but...
Mike (The Streets) Skinner's cameo in Dr Who last week!
Better than The Beatles! Better than McFly! Better, even, than Leee John from Imagination!

Congratulations to Lee, for spotting probably the clever plot twist hidden in last week's episode Flesh And Stone. It had completely escaped my notice, but if you're curious re-watch the scene with the Dr and Amy in the woods (on the i>Player, from around 17 minutes in)...
