Saw 2 onwards are all shot here in Toronto. Sunshine is surprisingly good - simple premise but well shot, gripping stuff. The Host is one of the best Monster movies I have seen. Bleak, humorous and gory. The Holiday is awfal, very patronising, overly long, improbable, sickening. The shot of St Albans masquerading as Surrey is amusing though.

Off to see No Country for Old Men tomorrow - quite excited about that.
I heard Will Smith on Radio One on promotion for that film carrie, and whilst he came across as a total berk - I thought the film sounded quite good. I hope to give it a try and some point.

It has Nihilists AND Aliens AND Stiffler (of his mum fame). How could you want for anymore?
To be honest, it falls into my two negatives make a plus belief, ie. If something is soooo bad, then by default it becomes good. This is not true of Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter is dead.

This forthcoming Burton/Depp Sweeney Todd musical is all very well, but didn't The Two Ronnies do it first? (Compare also 'From Hell' with 'The Phantom Rasberry-Blower of Old London Town')

It seems far too obvious (lazy) a subject for Tim Burton to be dealing with. I feel all Tim Burtoned out. I feel all Tom Cruised out. Maybe Tim has succumbed to that late Hollywood lethargy that seems to be haunting the place. Am sickened by Stallone now doing Rambo again. What a dick.

Amusingly, Sara* (who was suggested 'Death Proof' by the assistant at her rental shop) had no idea what the film was about, and was extremely freaked-out as soon as Kurt Russel's character went all weird, ha-ha.
[*Other films chosen by: A = George; B = Laura; C = Carolyn. Hmm, Facebook group?]

Just watched 'Control', and to be honest, I could quite happily have handed him the rope by the end of it... To qualify, I thought it was incredibly well acted - with the possible exception of the guy playing Tony Wilson - but I've always been profoundly irked by Ian Curtis. Amazing songwriter/utter twat, in my opinion...

I suspect reading 'touching from a distance' just before watching 'Control' was not the best move in terms of setting yourself up not to enjoy a film (my copy of the DVD came with the book). I could have done with a film debunking the romantic rubbish that surrounds Ian Curtis rather than feed into the myth that he and Tony Wilson bought into. I had a very real sense of deja-vu reading Deborah Curtis' book stemming from my clinical experience. The guy exhibits symptom after symptom of borderline personality disorder (a form of complex post traumatic stress disorder). Curtis' extreme reactions (i.e. cowering on the floor whimpering) following a minor car crash and having been surprised by Deborah as a joke, extreme emotional dis-regulation, difficulties in maintaining interpersonal relationships with those close to him (i.e., the classic 'I hate you, don't leave me' pattern, overly controlling and paranoid of infidelity), evidence of dissociative states*, self-harm, engaging in risk taking behaviors, a fractured sense of self, manipulation and dishonesty used as strategies to maintain a public self etc. Non of the above detracts form him being a great song writer. I just have very little patience in damaged individuals being placed on pedestals and viewed as geniuses (yes Caroline, I'm getting over my Wittgenstein fixation ). *Whilst these have been interpreted as evidence of epilepsy, seizures brought on by stress with no physiological evidence and that are unresponsive to medication points toward psychogenic seizures to me (what was pejoratively known as pseudo-epilepsy in the past), a conscious or subconscious strategy to avoid stressful situations. Deborah herself almost comes to this conclusion and states that they often occurred when he was on the losing side in an argument.

I'd rather you didn't quote directly but you're are welcome to use it's arguments. btw other symptoms of BPD would be depression and para-suicidal acts (his coming to be and telling his wife he had just taken an overdose)

That's OK - I have no clinical experience and don't want to paraphrase you. Don't worry about objecting, though, that's why I checked!

'E' as for '8 Mile' (Noeleen's choice, though she was absent). It's alright really, and gains plus points for not having much of a conclusion. There was some split in the room about whether '8 Mile' begins with an 'E' or an '8' - I say 'E'. Eminem begins with an 'E' too!

(Carried over form the Doctor Who Restoration Team forums again:) The German film magazine Zeit reports that an original full-length print of 'Metropolis' has turned up in Argentina (translated link here www.zeit.de/online/2008/27/metropolis-vorab-englisch ) - The rest of the world has only had the chopped-up versions for over 80 years...

'H' was Helen's choice (we're doing well with alphabetical matching at the moment) of the musical remake of Hairspray. There are many good cameos.

'J' was for Joy Division (the Grant Gee/Jon Savage documentary). One of the choices offered by Sara and Scott.
It's really, really good.
But we got very, very drunk.

on saturday we watched 'leatherheads' (not terrible, just rubbish) followed by 'in bruges' which is excellent. even i (with my famous lack of humour) laughed out loud repeatedly (it's a black comedy) so so good.

Helen chose 'Lolita' for 'L' on Friday, and Vicky chose 'Midnight Cowboy' for 'M' on Sunday. On Saturday we got 'Be Kind, Rewind' out too. Busy film weekend really.
