Friday, February 10, 2006. p106. Laptops and sitars at Harpers. Laptops and old-fashioned instruments will both share pride of place as Rashamon and Same Actor perform at Harpers tomorrow. Rashamon - the creation of former Bexhillian Lee Hume - will be splitting the bill with former Brighton resident Chris Cook as part of the venue's continuing Club Apotheosis series. Electronic experimentalist Lee Hume has been making records for over 15 years. He recently released an album entitled Frightened by the Familiar and en EP called The Power of Hatred through local record label Dizzy Tiger. Same Actor, alias new London resident Chris Cook, also performs under the monikers Remote and Hot Roddy. He uses various stringed instruments, such as the sitar, to construct soundscapes based on alternative tuning methods and world rhythms. For more information on Rashamon, log on to www.passive-aggressive.co.ukFor details of Same Actor, check the website at www.hotroddy.com Rashamon's The Power of Hatred could become the first in a series of electronica Singles Club-style releases on the Dizzy Tiger label. If you wish to contribute a further release in the series, call the Stu at the label on 07745 386444. (Words: John Hill)

John's come through on this week's article, with plenty of details, and a photo of Lee & Chris (at The Albert, Brighton, I think) sourced from on of their sites. As usual, I'll post up the article later in the day, once people have got a chance to pick up copies of the paper themselves.
There's also a short piece (with photo) on p27 of 'Other Words open mic night for Sara Lee Trust charity'.
Plus, on p24, 'Local and international talent at Black Horse fest': Tim Hoyte's down there, as are a handful of fairly well-known musicians that'd be worth a look (Glen Tilbrook, Trevor Watts & Jamie Harris, Wilko Johnson), but, unfortunately, not those great crowd-displeasers Rumiko Jr. Boo!

Better line-up than last year on the face of it. But screw 'em man, they don't get The John, it's taken them years to finally get with the Tim Hoyte (which is such a no-brainer) and whilst they have been good to us (getting us to prop up 80's has-beens and pub rock soul outfits), I think we can do without it.

Tim should have played before, certainly; he's right up their street, and damn good (a sight better than many other acts at Black Horse). As we discussed before, I reckoned your set at your second Black Horse appearance (in which you dispensed with 2 or 3 album tracks early on, then played loads of new stuff, and no covers) was the spot-on way to tackle that gig, even if the crowd didn't listen, and you didn't give the few people who'd seen you the previous year a re-tread of the same set. You got your props from the other bands and the compere afterwards, at least. But yeah, you're moving in a different path now. I may still go and see Glen Tilbrook though.

After spending a lovely drunken Friday down the Brass Monkey at the Rumiko gig, jabbering away at great length to John Hill and Kay Harrison, can I just point out to everyone that I did manage to slur "...er, off the record..." at one point, so any future scandals and exclusives in the paper are all someone else's fault, not mine, ta...

p34. If it ain't Rother - don't bother! (Full page article on 'Rotherbeat', led by a Mumm-Ra/Youngplan feature, plus profiles & photos of Rumiko Jr, Doctor Fonda and Regular John, followed by- )
Taster of the talent on your doorstep.
Fans of the expanding Hastings music scene can get a sample of just what our region has to offer with a new compilation CD out this month.
THE ALBUM, called Anti, has been produced by the Dizzy Tiger label and includes the very best of local talent alongside artists from Eastbourne, Brighton and even Canada. The album features advance tracks from the forthcoming albums by two of Hastings' most popular bands - Rumiko Jr (their second album The Great Western Lie) and Regular John (their debut Crack Elvis), along with excellent contributions from other top local live acts such as Tim Hoyte, The Black Tulips and Doctor Fonda. One of the strengths of the album is its often random mix of genres with hard rock appearing alongside more traditional punk and indie. As Stuart Huggett of Dizzy Tiger explained: "I don't know if there are any other minimum-wage record labels who would throw techno, heavy rock, alt-country, experimental electronica, psychedelic-folk, soul and post-punk together like we do at Dizzy Tiger. "In this way, we avoid pigeon-holing the artists or label and are able to surprise the listener at every turn." The record, available on cassette or CD, costs just £1 and will hopefully be available from the Music Xchange shop on the corner of Claremont, and behind the bar at Smugglers. To order a copy email: dizzytigerstu@yahoo.co.uk

I missed a couple of editions of the Hastings Observer recently, dated 26th Sept & 3rd Oct*, so if anyone bought them & not yet recycled them (or whatever) can you hang on to them please? Otherwise I'll pop into the Hastings Library next time I'm in town on a weekday, and have a quick browse.
[*EDIT - Jan 23, Mar 13&20, Jun 12, Aug 21, Oct 9, Dec 11 &18 2009 all missed too, I think. Plus 2010: Jan 8, 22, Feb 19, Apr 9, May 14, Jun 11, 18, Aug 13. 2011: Jan 28, Mar 18]

Well, I think both Michael & Caroline and my Mum tend to pick up the Hastings Observer fairly regularly (and I'm sure had last week's, and today's probably), but yeah, if you haven't chucked those 2 old ones out that'd be grand. A person can actually take out a mail-order subscription, I've just not been able to sort that out yet! One day.

It was only when it was lying under the cats' litter tray that I noticed tha Hastings Observer's coverage (November 21st edition) of the story that Jamie Oliver was sourcing local fish for his retaurants:
"Jamie loves our Soles"
I'm suprised that got past the subs...

I'm not sure comparing running the Bexhill Farm Kitchen to Woolworths' troubles was entirely a reasonable comparison...

kirsty said she hopes that comment doesn't come back to bite him in the ass (my wording). camilla, the interviewer was there for over an hour and lee is a talker, i think there may have been some editing involved, although the woolworths comment is basically right.

Terrible article from this Friday's Hastings Observer on 'Duvet Man', quoting ill-informed ramblings of daft Facebook users in totally crass manner. But, weirdly, compare with a new poem by Iain Sinclair that went online a day later.

I'm lined-up to guest edit this column next week, so make sure people let me know if they've got events coming up during Dec 4th-10th. It's an online-only column, so hopefully the industry stories that local paper publishers Johnston Press are gonna start trialing some of their titles' sites pay-only as of next week don't apply to the Observer yet!

Here's my Ragged Trousered Hedonist guest blog (it's true, I do have ragged trousers). As most of you know, the phone app mentioned is the free one over at the www.on-uk.com site. It got edited down, but I had included the point that anyone can add their events info the the app free-of-charge on that site, if you want to give it a go anytime. All the public submissions just get checked-over for accuracy by me or Adam and that lot at the office before they go live.
