Last night went to Filmschool / Rogers Sisters and The Pipettes at the Komedia. Filmschool were like a weird cross between Kaiser Chiefs and the Cure - bit rubbish really. Rogers Sisters were great - had not previously heard them, they were fun! Pipettes were fab, as usual - they've finally perfected the Bananarama moves (and look in some cases). Fully recommend Miss Pain / Shrag on Friday at Audio - unfortunately I cannot go - but I bet it would be a good night. Anyone going to anything else? x

hi carolyn. i didn't realise you were there! paffy and i went down for the rogers sisters, but we didn't stay for the pipettes. in what WORLD do the pipettes get to headline over the rogers sisters? seriously. they're fun and everything, but the rogers sisters are actual contenders with a stunning recorded history, not dancer/ performers whose boys write their songs for them.

I've seen the Pipettes twice now, and to be honest not sure I'd bother again. But, they are fun!
I was surprised at how busy it was - and most did stay 'till the end - I think the pipettes were headlining as they have a strong local following.
I think the Pipettes is the sort of band you'd only see live - and not buy any records. Whereas, the Rogers Sisters would sound very nice in my front room.
I just wished I'd bought a badge and a sticker, only £1...

I won't hear anything against the Pipettes (especially the brunette one, Carolyn) but I am biased because they are Monster Bobbys band and he is a lovely man.
Theres a Spirit of Gravity free gig at the Sanctuary tomorrow night which should be quite nice.
Oh and theres a free Rashamon gig at the Fortune of War tonight (if you didn't already know).

Would love to! Got an album of hers and also saw a nice mini documentary. Ah - feels just like reading the Wire now. Gigs I'd like to go to in other countries being advertised. Nick - you've still got time to jump on a plane and get over here just in time to miss my free gig tonight!

Is this Brighton Live stuff just running for this week? Chris has posted on the Spirit Of Gravity boards spiritofgrav.proboards57.com that he (as Hot Roddy), Sold and DJ Crummy Dog (?!) are downstairs at the Sanctuary Cafe, Hove for it tonight. Re: The Pipettes. I know they're all friends-of-friends (and I don't want to get arsey 'cos I'm still hoping Bobby will come through and send me a Totally Bored - Copy This Tape compilation), but they are coming across more as some bloke's arts degree project than a band. Lee's comment about the brunette one (however far his toungue is in his cheek) is gonna sum up The Pipettes problem: they are three very attractive women singing other people's (men's) songs. No-one else will have noticed, but at the moment the NME cannot resist printing a big photo of one or all of them whenever they have something coming up in the gig guide. Fun as they can be (though only the track on the most recent Totally Bored cd really appealed, of the ones I've heard), I can't see them being any more that an indie-kid's wank fantasy. And for a group who, in interviews, have spoken about how much Riot Grrl meant to them, that's a crying shame. By the way, has one of them left and been replaced recently (the photos looked different, but I haven't bothered to check the info on their new website www.thepipettes.co.uk with the old press articles I've got)? Anyhow, The Pipettes are now signed to Memphis Industries www.memphis-industries.com , so a Go!Team-style push is to be expected. That's gonna be testing for all-concerned.

My comment about the brunette one was because for some reason during the gig Carolyn professed to hating her. I said to stop picking on her not because she was pretty but because she was Bobbys girlfriend! I don't know where the whole thing is going with either the Pipettes or Go Team. Go Team are releasing a re-recorded version of their album for mass publicity and because they can't get the samples cleared. Neither of these bands seem destined for anything more than being a cartoon. But hey, no pop no style. I love a boy in uniform. School Uniform!

Shit, didn't realise the re-release of the Go!Team album was gonna be re-recorded, gonna have to pick up the proper version quick! Of course, I bought the first Go!Team 7" on Pickled Egg at the ATP record stall a few years back, but, um, only because I though it was the K Records act The Go Team, so not very on-the-ball after all! It was Miles, who was there at the time, who put me right (actually, Ian Go!Team was somewhere there as well..) I disagree that the Go!Team are a cartoon band, just a brightly-coloured one! Day-glo! etc. Though now you've put the idea of a Brighton cartoon band scene in my head, I really like it! Exclamation mark frenzy!
(new Fall album "Exclamation Mark Frenzy" available now in all good record stores)

We're forgetting Gorillaz.....not a good idea. I'm pretty sure the album is being re-recorded. I know for sure the single has been. There was a feature in the Guide about them. Could have dream't the whole thing anyway.... Where did Ethan come from?

Went to a Spirit of Gravity meeting last night - apparently 30th September at Rikki Tik there is a Spirit of Gravity free night as part of Brighton Live this year. So of course I said I'd be up for playing.
Then today, completely out of the blue, Anna from Melting Vinyl emailed me to invite me to play at the Concorde 2 on 30th September as part of Brighton Live. Its an alldayer mix of bands, believe its free entry. I said if I could play late afternoon I'd do it - she said after 4pm and I of course said yes.
So now I have to sort out a bloody good set to play but the question is...do I play both in the same day or relinquish the Grav?
BTW - you're all invited. Me...at the Concorde 2! How chuffed am I!

Duty calls: play both! Unless the rest of the Concorde 2 line-up is so special that you can't face missing anything... I'm sure all your friends at Rikki Tik (uh?) would understand (cough)!

Yay Lee - that's great. Give yrself a pat on the back!
RIki Tiks is an odd venue isn;t it - full of those youngsters you hear about in the papers. It's blinkin cheap tho for its drinks, and thats a good thing.
Very excited bout concorde 2 event, might be time to start making Rashamon t-shirts.
Defo play both if you can.

Dirty Cakes for me! According to the Concorde 2 website the all day event utilises 3 stages around the venue in a kind of 'later with jools holland' type of way. Should be loads of bands, then! Just not sure who yet....

If it wasn't for the fact that I'm in Hastings and going to see Deano at Revolver, I'd be going to this Brighton Audio gig - recommended! Coin-Op and Fujiya & Miyagi are also on the bill. Have a good one, Tulips!

Couldn't make it to Black Tulips one - hope it went well.
Went to Waxed Apple last night. I know at least one of you know them well - but if anyone ever gets the chance to see them - do. They were great.
Poppycocks however were a bit shit. Dissapointing as had seen them about 18 months ago, and they were really good - in an orange juice kinda way.
Anyway - looking forward to Rashamon on Sat - it's even mentioned on the flyer now!

More of an orange squash... I concur - Waxed Apple were even better than the last time I saw them, which was supporting LCD Soundsystem. Distinctly remember wishing they could have player longer and LCD shorter... Yes kids, look forward to 'eccentric electronica' (not my words) at the Concorde 2 bar area on Saturday from 5.10pm till 5.30pm. Should be about four songs worth - will just take the laptop as it seems a bit pointless pissing about setting up to play for 20 mins. I'm not actually complaining by the way, I've had a stressful week and haven't got much in the way to show for it for a set so I'm glad I'm only playing for 20mins. Plus I hadn't managed to master the melodica competently enough - so just pressing play it is!

Lee getting an Omnichord is a great idea Mr Cannycanuck (i've wanted one for a while). It would be a nice addition to the Rashamon sound.
