fucking hell! here i am, finally. We had a great time in LA, caught up with Brandye and Miah, experienced and destroyed Venice beach, The whisky a go-go, the Troubadour, the Roxy, The Viper Room, the Hollywood sign, Topanga and Laurel canyons, Sunset Strip/Blvd etc etc....stayed in a fucking great place between Hollywood and Beverly Hills, just off Santa MOnica Blvd. Absolutely unreal! Now in New ZEaland, Started in Queenstown with snow and freezing weather, went to Milford Sound to admire fiords and the most amazing landscapes ever made by God, went on boats, buses, trains etc...then today drove from Queenstown to Christchurch, 350 miles drive, stopping at some lakes and other places on the way. Holy shit this country is sooooo unbelievably beautiful, seriously. Its almost too much for the human eye to take in, so breathtaking. Feel a bit homesick and really wish i had a guitar but nevermind, it's awesome! The hotels we've had have turned up to be much better than they looked on the Net, in fact we feel like posh fuckers! Couldn't ask for more. Really couldnt! Hope you're all good, and that the summer has finally arrived in England! We are away for another 5 weeks...my god!

Hello! we had a great time in christchurch, we then left and went to a place called Kaikura that was like the garden of eden it was so spectacularly beautiful, got on a boat and went whale watching, saw 4 whales and loads of dolphins and even an albatross! then we had locally caught lobster for dinner which was amazing. The next day we drove all the way to Picton which is on the edge of the south island, crossed over in the ferry and spent a day in Wellington which is the capital. Yesterday we drove to a place called Napier which is a university town and had a great night out boozing! now about to head off to see one of the biggest lakes in new zealand, have lunch in a winery on the way and end up in Rotorua tonight which has natural hot steams and termal baths. Fucking hell! The highlight was the other day when we where on our way to Picton, early misty morning we found this remote beach and sat on the rocks in the rain, was taking it all in when i noticed a darker rock about a meter on my left and realized it moved...it was a fucking giant seal and it gave me a heart attack! however, she just stared at me and i was speechless frightened that it may attack me but appearently they dont do that unless you try to touch them! wow

Down below is a travel diary i wrote yesterday:
hello everybody! as you may know, we left england on July 19th for a big trip round the world, and here's a little update on things... The first stop was Los Angeles, we arrived in the afternoon and the weather was awesome, 30 degrees and sunshine. We stayed at a lovely place just off Santa Monica Boulevard, that had a swimming pool and a lot of other nice things such as Jacuzzi, sauna and obviously, a bar. We then went to Sunset Boulevard, the walk of fame, and a lot of vintage guitar shops that made me dribble. And wondered at how beautiful the food looked in the local supermarket, absolutely stunning...vegetables that tasted like vegetables, and some gorgeous cheeses...yummm The following morning we were picked up by our californian friends Jeremiah and Brandye, and in the following 3 days they drove us everywhere...Venice Beach, the Hollywood sign/hills, Beverly Hills, Topanga Canyon, Laurel Canyon, Santa Monica, Long Beach etc etc and we enjoyed hanging out at some classic LA hotspots such as the Rainbow, Whisky a go-go, the Troubadour, Viper Room as well as some faboulous restaurants, one of which was a great mexican place where i had the best prawns ever! The last day or two we just sunbathed and enjoyed the pool and some quiet times, trying to recover from all the partying! Next, we flew to Auckland in New Zealand, 13 hours flight, and changed planes, got one to Queenstown which is at the bottom of the south island, another 3 hours. By the time we got there we were knackered but revitalized by the fresh crisp air...-2 degrees, snowy mountains all around us, and a hotel room which had a beautiful lake view! We took it easy for a while just exploring the town, having some beautiful fish and some great local wines. The following day we embarked on a bus trip to Milford Sound, which has to be the most beautiful place on earth...the drive there was 5 hours, going through some amazing scenery and stopping in a few places, one of which was Lake Tihana, not sure if i'm spelling that right. Once we got there, very very high up in the mountains, we got dropped off and got on a boat that took us through all the fiords that Milford Sound is famous for, and that was the most amazing thing i've ever seen...it looked like an untouched land, probably one of the few that hasn't been ruined by mankind! Also we saw waterfalls, seals on the rocks, dolphins etc. Mindblowing stuff! The following day we picked up a hire car and drove all the way to Christchurch, again that was an amazing scenery that kept changing constantly...mountains, lakes, valleys, hills, then the desert, the plain, pastures, and fields, then a long stretch of motorway through some flat land. When we got there, in the early evening, we were pleased to find out that another great hotel was in store for us...right in the town center, next to all the restaurants, bars and nightlife. After dinner Bob went to bed and i went out by myself, ended up jamming with some rock band and getting very pissed! Next day we took the Transalpine Express train and spent the whole day admiring the amazing sceneries across the Southern Alps and other places, stopping for lunch in a place called Greymouth. Again, when we got back we dined at a beutiful restaurant and went out for some drinks. In the morning we headed off to a place called Kaikura, which looked like an old wild west kind of town, ate some beutiful scallops for lunch and then went whale watching on a boat...we saw 4 whales, some dolphins and even an albatross! The evening was rainy, unfortunately, but we had lobster for dinner, which was a must considering that Kaikura is famous for having so much lobster they don't know what to do with it...they even have kiosks on the side of the road selling it, in high season! However, that was a fabulous dinner and we celebrated things by getting pissed on some beutiful locally produced white wine. Also, we stayed at a little cosy motel that was so beutifully decorated it almost hurt the eye...the room was superb! Overwhelmed by things, we departed again the next morning and drove all the way to the top of the island to a place called Picton...it was great, we struggled a bit because it was a very very windy road up and down the mountains, but well worth it. Once in a while we stopped at some cafe for a coffee and a snack...the cafes here not only offer amazing breakfasts like Egg Benedictine or Pancakes with fresh fruit and maple syrup, but also the most amazing range of home cooked things, like Patties, Stacks, Savoury Muffins and Pies! A far cry from our greasy spoons :-( Once in Picton, we dropped the car off and crossed over the channel, and that took the rest of the day...we arrived in Wellington, which is the capital of New Zealand, in the evening and were so tired we had a meal and went to bed. The following morning we picked up another car and drove to a place called Napier, on the east coast...oddly we went through a town called Hastings! Napier was amazing, it got destroyed by earthquake at the beginning of the century i think, and got rebuilt in the 30s...most of the houses are art-deco and it looks spectacular. We stayed at the famous Masonic Hotel, and treated ourselves to a Suite...mind you, it's the low season so it was only 110 new zealand dollars for the night...that's like 50 quid! We went out and had local Oysters for dinner, followed by Scallops! And as usual, loads of beautiful Sauvignon Blanc! Then hit the bars..whoops. The following day's hangover was nursed with a champagne breakfast and eggs benedictine, fortunately. We sat on the beach and admired the buildings. Then we left and went to Lake Taupo, which is the biggest of the north island lakes, had lunch there, then continued to a place called Rotorua, where we spent the following 2 days and nights. The town is famous for its thermal baths and springs, and our hotel had not only its own spring, but also a Jacuzzi bath in every room! Here we went to the Polynesian SPA, and layed in the beutiful therapheutic waters, some are better for joint/muscle aches, some others for the skin, but they do make you dizzy after a while! However, the springs are outside, overlooking a beutiful lake, so when you get out you are obviously hot given the temperature of the water, but after a minute you start freezing your ass off! The place was crowded with japanese people, and in the changing/shower area we had the confirmation that what they say about Japanese men's manhood is certainly true! Also we went exploring some Maori villages and to a beutiful place called Rainbow Springs that had all the wildlife of NZ, from Kiwi birds to Kias, strange Ostrich-looking giant birds and all sorts od strange parrots! Even giant black pigs and some other akward looking animals! Most nights in Rotorua were excellent, the first one we went to a blues jam session in a fantastic looking bar, not only i got to play harmonica with a few different lineups, but i also did a couple of songs singing and playing guitar with the house band backing me up....Are you ready for some fucking Neil YOung, Rotorua?!?!?! Obviously, we both went back to the hotel legless. The next night was even better...we had another beutiful dinner in a restaurant there, and then walked past a place called the Pheasant Plucker, and this guy who was playing piano the night before at the jam was doing a gig there, on his own. So, as soon as we walk in, he gets me up to play harmonica with him, and doesn't let me go after the song is over. I ended up playing with him the whole night, and it was one of the highlights of my career as a harmonica player. Not only i played my arse off, but this guy SERIOUSLY was incredible. He played and sang just like Ray Charles, i am not joking. So we played a lot of Ray, lots of tasty early blues, and other stuff like Nina Simone etc....what a guy! Simply superb...the best thing was, he was playing a grand piano, and there were only 2 condenser microphones over it to put the sound through the PA, so i didn't have to use a microphone or anything. The place was mesmerized by what was going on, people kind of whispered all night because the music was so good there was no need to talk. When he played Georgia on my mind you could hear a pin drop, and i think that was the best harp i've ever played in my entire life, totallY! The next day we drove to Auckland, feeling happy and satisfied. We arrived at Bob's brother's Micheal at 4 in the afternoon, and it felt great to actually STOP. Wow, we had suitcases full of dirty clothes, and we were knackered. We have now been here for a couple of days, their place is beutiful, complete with a swimming pool, and we have our own room and computer etc. The best part is that Micheal's wife Raf plays the piano and has an upright, so I've been playing it a lot and wrote 2 new songs on it. Went to a music shop yesterday and hired a guitar for a week so i'm satisfying my lust for some 6 string fun! Auckland is beautiful also, Bob drove around today and we had lunch at the Harbour, followed by a trip to Mount Eden, that overlooks the whole town. Tomorrow, we are going up north to the top of the island, coming back tuesday. Then off to an open mic night on Wednesday night, and to a dinner party on thursday that has been organized in Bob's honour by the Great Dane Club of New Zealand. The weekend is yet unplanned but we are flying to Sydney, Australia, next sunday morning, where i am gonna meet up with some old friends for more debauchery. Then off to Melbourne, same thing but with the addition of a Bob Dylan concert. Then off to Singapore. Then Thailand, both the beaches, and Bangkok. I've spend the last 2 weeks and a half wondering if this is really happening, it's been so good. It probably will feel like we have just woken up from a long sleep filled with beutiful dreams, when we get home. However, we are not thinking of that just yet! I hope you've enjoyed reading our tour diary, i will send you part 2 when we get near the end of the trip. In the meantime, we are missing you all and hope that your lives are filled with love and joy just as much as ours are. Take care of yourselves, loads and loads and loads of love Alfie and Bob xxx

hey everybody! after a crazy week in Auckland, we are now in Sydney and the weather is fabulous. On my last night in Auckland i met up with Emily and had an extremely bizarre experience when she turned up with Crazy Joe! I didn't even know they were there and meeting up on the other side of the world was odd! Anyhow, we got trashed, as you would expect and a good chat. Staying in Sydney with some friends of Bob at a farm full of dogs and salad bowls full of weed that their son has grown?!?!?!?! Been sitting in the garden all morning quite dopey with 6 massive great danes hanging around me and staring at me with their dopey faces ah ah ah fucking funny shit. People are making sure that we get fed, drunk, etc, wherever we go and it's actually good to be with friends/family again after a week and a half traveling on our own on the South island. Bloody hell! hope you're all good, will write again soon Alfie x

Hey everybody! here's part 2 of our adventures abroad... The day after posting part 1 of our tour diary we borrowed Robert's brother's daughter's car (complicated isn't it) and left Auckland, Bay of Islands bound. The first stop was a wonderful beach called Orewa, where Robert used to play as a kid...we had a peculiar cup of coffee there in a mug that had no handle...well it was more like a soupbowl. Weird. However, they made up for it by making the best carrot cake i've ever had! The drive up was beautiful, we stopped at what looked like an old colonial house on the beach for a leg-stretch, which is now a museum, and also at an old colonial town which featured a beutiful hotel-pub where Robert's dad used to get loaded in his younger days. When we finally got to Piha, it was too late to get the boat across so we opted for a nice drink and had something to eat, and had a walk on the beach barefoot. We did get our feet wet but the water was damn cold! The following morning we crossed over in a little boat and were pleased to be informed that no japanese tourist ever makes it as far as the Bay of Islands...what a relief! On the other side, we went to a little village called Russell, and had some beutiful breakfast...everything there was like in the 50s, very laid back. In fact, falling over! On our way back, Robert told me that his eye had gone funny and he was seeing double, and after my initial "must be the beer" obligatory joke, i realized that he was serious so on our return to Auckland he went to A&E and was kept in overnight...oh dear. Anyhow, the result was something wrong with a nerve at the back of his eye and they announced YES it will come right but it may take up to 3 months and there's nothing they can do. So ever since, Bob has been seen occasionally wearing an eyepatch to see where he's going...poor thing! After a few more days in Auckland spent with family, we flew to Sydney and were picked up on a delightful warm sunday afternoon by Robert's wonderful friends Leslie and Dave, who then proceeded to start spoiling us by taking us to Manly Beach, then to a lovely chinese restaurant. After a nice walkaround that made me realize how lucky they are with the weather ( It was supposed to be a winter day: the beach was full of people and a lot of them were swimming in the sea! ) we headed to thier farm in Glossodia, which is an hour drive out of Sydney, and were greeted by 4 enormous great dane dogs and 2 other little ones that I think are called Frenchies or something like that. After a beautiful dinner that consisted of oysters, crabs, prawns, seabass, salads, and cannelloni, we hit the sack exahusted. The next day was lovely, the guys drove us to the Blue MOuntains, where we were lucky enough to visit the 3 Sisters...3 massive peaks that, surrounded by all the rest, made us think of the Grand Canyon...it looked just like it! It was an amazing landscape indeed. On the way back i noticed one of those funny photo shops and talked Robert into having our picture taken in old Colonial clothes...the results were..err...hilarious for you and deeply embarrassing for us of course. You have to come visit us if you want to see it as we are not making THAT public! Again, that night we were treated to a delicious steak meal washed down with some very fine wine...did i mention Dave and Leslie own a liquor store...ahhhem...not that we took advantage! The following day, off to Sydney town...drove to Manly, then got on a boat that took us there...when we got there, we arrived facing the Opera House and the massive skyline...wow! After another boat ride to Watson's Bay, we then met up with my friend Dave and went to a famous restaurant on the harbour called Doyle's. The food was great, and again we washed it off with some lovely wines. After that, i stayed with Dave and enjoyed an afternoon of debauchery in Sydney, then later on we picked up Bob from the farm and took him back to Dave's house with us. We stayed there the night, and the next day he took us out to see a lot of great things in town, including some secluded beaches etc. Next, he announced that we were having a barbecue that night, at his place, and that some friends of mine from the "old housesharing times in LOndon town" were coming. I hadn't seen these people in 12 years and we had a hell of a great time catching up, talking about old times, and eating Kangaroo! I never thought i would, but it tasted very nice indeed. Saying goodbye the next morning wasn't easy, especially with a raging hangover...errghhh. We got on a train to Melbourne, and we were off. A 9 hour journey into wild lands, not much to look at really. But still good fun. When we finally got there, we were pleasently surprised to find out that our hotel was bang on in the center of the city and very pretty. My friend Mala joined us for dinner and seeing her again after all these years made me realize how much you miss people, even when you don't notice it so much, in your every-day-life...it's so easy to get carried away with what spins around you all the time that it takes 12 years to catch up with somebody you love very much, sometimes. I am actually working on that now, looking for ways to go back travelling next year so we can all see each other regularly! The following day was spend walking around Melbourne and taking things in, what a great city! It has a certain european flavour, and an aboundance of shops and bars. The live music scene is great and the restaurants superb. That night we met up with some other friends, and went to see Bob Dylan perform at the Rod Lever Arena. Backed by a superb band, we witnessed the old guy kicking some serious arse and proving once again what a genious he is. Some of the audience were a bit disappointed that he only played 2 or 3 old songs, concentrating on tracks from his last 3 albums (Time out of mind, Love and Theft, Modern Times) instead. I thought that was awesome and was actually very happy about that as i have seen him play 5 times before. We ended up in some bar later on, drinking champagne till the early hours and getting extremely messy! The next day Mala picked us up in the car and drove us around many places, including a very funky little neighborhood full of bohemian shops etc. Being a pro photographer, she couldn't help taking some shots of me and Robert, walking down an alley, etc. Nice stuff indeed, but again, only for private use...or we may be accused of "extreme cheesyness!" That afternoon continued with a visit to a lovely second hand guitar shop, which was dangerous indeed, but the guys made sure they dragged me away with an excuse before i ended up with another expensive gadget in my collection...bastards! We ended up at Mala's place and later on they took us to the airport, which was very nice of them. I didn't want to go and proceeded to down a few beers at the airport, in resignation. We arrived in Singapore many hours later, changed planes, then arrived in Phuket, Thailand, many more hours later, in a tropical sticky rainstorm. We then got a cab to Patong. Again, we managed to do very well with the hotel, which was a gorgeous 5 star palace of exotic bliss, with palm trees, pools, SPAs, and all sorts. Our little bungalow was awesome, and for the following week we stayed there. Patong Beach is a crazy place, very busy all day and all night, bit sleazy, bohemian, noisy, hectic, but very charming. The streets are full of tiny shops that sell all sorts of hippie shit, fake watches, fried chicken feet and boat trips. Not to mention that every 3 or 4 doors, there's a "massage center" with at least 5 or 6 girls outside that try to drag you in whenever you walk past! I loved it! I felt in my element...cheap drinks, loads of freshly cooked seafood, smoke anywhere you like, 24-7 nightlife, a gorgeous beach, warm weather. My kind of place. Every night we'd be eating al fresco, and most restaurants would have a massive icy counter covered in fresh fish...lobsters, squid, prawns, seabass, all sorts. You'd choose what you want, they cook it for you on charcoal and boy, did it taste good! A beer was less than a pound, and this is a COMMERCIAL place, in Thailand. So cheap! And SO GOOD! But again, if you are a bit fassy or are easily shockable, it may not be the place for you ( I won't go into details of when i went out by myself late one night ). One day, we went on a boat trip that included Phi Phi Island, where we fed sea monkeys bananas, Maya Bay, and the island where the film THE BEACH with Leo di Caprio was filmed...absolutely stunning....we did loads of snorkelling and i was as happy as a pig in shit...thousands of multi coloured tropical fishes swimming right in front of your eyes. Then, i realized that they liked munching on corals, so i grabbed a post-tsunami coral from the bottom, and held it in front of my eyes, surrounded by thousands of fishes! "Alfie and the amazing technicolour Fishcoat!" When we left Thailand i realized that a life long love affair had begun. I hope we'll be going back very soon. Oh, and i forgot to mention that i jammed with a band whilst i was there, and that there are loads of musicians around...which was quite bizzarre. On our last few days, we were in Singapore, the city is very tidy and clean and our 5 star hotel was absolutely FAB. We ate there the first night and had some truly amazing food. Amongst the things we did, were visits to Chinatown and Little India, all the shops on Orchard Road, the financial district, and the Orchid Gardens, which were beautiful. Oh, did i mention that my wages went in on our last day there, and i proceeded to spend 900 pounds in studio microphones? Well, that 900 would have been something like 2800, in England. So much cheaper! So i had a good excuse, this time. Well. Just about. On our last night, we sat on the side of the river, in a beautiful al fresco italian restaurant, and had a toast, feeling very pleased with the way things went. What a blast! Then we found a bar that had a blues jam session on, and altough the musicians were a bunch of ego maniacs, it was a great way to finish the trip off, i got up and played some harp and had too much to drink, as usual. The next morning we had our last lovely breakfast at the hotel and left. That was the end of it. We did it, we thought...and it felt like a massive achievment. I think getting to the end of the day alive, is an achievment. So that felt pretty good! That's all folks. We are now back, it feels like we've never left, as i thought it might. Going out on saturday, back at work, Musetta is still a pain in the arse, we miss everyone already, we are looking at the pictures (all 19 films of them!) with a tear in the eye and love in our hearts, and hope you've enjoyed part 2 of the adventures of two lunatics on a 6 weeks journey round this wonderful unsolved mystery that we call the Earth x
