That virus from Myspace that disables your anti-virus scan programs? I think we've got it on Paula's computer. Thanks, Myspace. Grrr...

How can you tell, Stu? As far as I'm aware, my anti-virus software's working fine (I do a sweep every Friday), but I'd like to be sure.... What are the signs?

We've had an automatic piece of AOL software that does a sweep every time you sign on. It hasn't popped up and done the sweep for about 24 hours now... I'll run some programs later if I can work out how.

i'll get tom to tell you what he did, something to do with refreshing the whole pooter (but it had deleted that facility), in terms of technical advice this is totally beyond me, but toms' pooter came up with with an unlocated file when initally starting the pooter and we don't have that (but this baby is old). don't know i'll pass it over.

If you have antivirus software actually installed on your pc start the programme and check that it is enabled. if it's antivirus on your internet providers' site, click the protection tab and check status and what you are guarded against

Thanks Tom, I'll try it when I'm sober, unless Carrie wants to have a go.

If it all goes a bit quiet online from Carolyn & I soon, it'll be because we think we've got a virus on our, already rather old and slow, computer here at home. As a note of caution, it seemed to appear when we were on Google UK. Carolyn typed You Tube into the search engine, but clicked on 'I'm Feeling Lucky', and it took us to another site, not YouTube (dunno quite what the site was though). Since then, the computer's been extremely slow, and has switched itself off twice this afternoon while I've been trying to post this message!

Lukily the PC seems to be still alive. However, due to the fuck up by BT, we are still offline for a while longer. I'm surprised at how reliant I had become on having the internet at home, I keep going to check or do things and then remember that I can't. Grrr.

Lisa, me, Paula, Adam and various others all got stung by this today, so beware- if you get a message in your Facebook inbox, claiming to be from one of your friends, be very wary of opening it. The wording varies, but it looks like a YouTube link, and when you click it, says that you need to update your Flash Player, and when you click to do so, downloads a whole load of nastiness onto your computer. Am hoping my anti-virus software has got rid of it, but it's buggered Paula's computer completely (although hopefully temporarily... Nasty stuff.

The virus checker isolated a couple of .exe's that began tt_ and then a string of numbers. I had to manually find bolivar25.exe which was hiding in the System folder, end the process and then delete. That seemed to do the trick.

That seemed to do the trick. Is it worth me searching our folders for stuff like this and deleting them if they're there, or - a fortnight after our computer got hit by something - would it be too late to do anything about it? Reading about this Facebook/YouTube thing, I have a feeling Emma Stace got spammed like this too recently, but possibly was unaware.

I'd suggest downloading the free version of AVG's anti-virus software (here, I think: free.avg.com/ ) if you can, and running a full computer scan to see what it picks up...

I have F-Secure on my laptop, will that be enough or should I download the AVG thing? I havn't found a virus yet so I think it's ok

The free AVG one won't install if you've already got virus protection - it'll recommend you delete your old one before installing AVG, so it may not be worth doing if your laptop's working fine.

Hi, I gave our computer a lengthy scan with our Norton AntiVirus earlier - I ran the main Scan My Computer task, and it did indeed pick out and get rid of a suspect file or program. Further down the Norton menu, it's got tasks for Scan Drives, Scan Folders and Scan Files - am I right in assuming that these are merely more specific parts of the task that will already have been covered by the main scan? I ran the Scan Drives bit and it took ages again, but picked up nothing new. Do I need to bother selecting specific Folders and Files to be scanned now too?

Our computer has been hit by the, apparently fake, 'Spyware Guard 2008' software - does anyone have a particularly recommended way of getting shot of it (there seems to be much discussion of this when we Google searched it)?

Looks like a similar virus has returned today, disguised as WOW Video links on people's Facebook News Feeds, purportedly from your friends. Do Not Click On Them!
