Oh, Thursday 9th August! I almost got that wrong and turned up this week!
Watched the old cartoon version of 'Transformers: The Movie' again last night. There's very little moral difference in behaviour between a 'heroic' Autobot and an 'evil' Decepticon, you know...
And Plexifilm have finally got 'Radio On' out as an all-region dvd in the States now, so that'll be one of my film-club choices, eventually.
Is anyone doing any Shot By The Sea stuff then?

I did do the Shot By The Sea event on Sunday by the way - Michael Powell's 1937 'The Edge Of The World' was superb (Scottish island melodrama) - even if it's nowadays impossible to watch John Laurie in anything without thinking "We're all doomed!" (cf: 'The 39 Steps')
'Inland Empire' at The Odeon, Wednesday morning? 'Jaws' on the beach Friday evening? Anyone?

Yeah, 'Inland Empire's a 9:30am, bring a picnic-breakfast screening - Carolyn & I were gonna pop up the FILO tonight (and I've half a bottle of sharp red wine leftover), so Wednesday morning's more likely to be spent working-off our hangovers! Even catching up with my laundry (likely) may be preferable to three hours of traumatised Laura Dern at that time of day...

8pm at Carrie's then, film starts 9pm.
For those of you going to see Mama Josie launch the FILO Carnival Beer Festival instead, Rufus reckons they've been rehearsing a version of 'Killing In The Name Of'...

Blimey, 'Barton fink' was a bit more existential than I was expecting...
I enjoyed seeing 'U.F.O' on tv beforehand too! Altogether now: "Dang Dang Dang-Dang (Ba-Ba Ba-Baah), Doo Do-Do Do-Do, Dang Dang Dang-Dang (Ba-Ba Ba-Baah)" etc

Our place this Thursday, then? Say, 8.30? I think we agreed last time to keep the film a surprise, but suffice it to say, Michael will be around, so I won't be inflicting any of my dreadful old 80s shite on you! Who's up for it?

I picked-up the Pet Shop Boys' 'It Couldn't Happen Here' film for 50p in a charity shop earlier in the week, and tried to watch it after the pub the other day... It was very hard to stay awake, and I didn't.

The Brighton film club is now running alphabetically. 'A' was for 'Adaptation'.

Saw 'Napoleon Dynamite' last night: There's a scene near the beginning, where Napoleon tells his class a spurious news story about the Loch Ness Monster - In real life, this was a stunt pulled by Hastings' white witch Kevin Carlyon at the time (and hence got into the film script)... Ooo, Hallowe'en spooky!

I fucking hate TV in this country. Example: last night was Halloween. In Italy, you get most channels playing horror films all night...a lot of old classics, a fucking great night! Here, there was ONE all night, on all channels, including the Sky ones, and it was, obviously, the first HALLOWEEN. The worst part, it didn't start until 23.45, so for people like me that get up at 6.30, no chance. What a crap Halloween. I'm going to see SAW4 tonight to make up for it....BRING ON THE SPOOKS!!!

I finished work too late to go out, and discovered 'The Shining' (or 'The Shinning'- God, the Simpsons has ruined that film for me! ) buried on one of the Freeview channels, so I watched that. Trouble is, I've seen it so many times, and Jack Nicholson is such a spectacular ham, that it doesn't frighten me any more*. Ah well... Alfie, I seem to remember TV channels going more all out for Halloween when I was younger (anyone want to back me up on this one?)- for example this: www.bbc.co.uk/cult/classic/ghostwatch/ which was fabulous, in its own dreadful way, and caused outrage (amongst the numpties who thought it was real), and hilarity for everyone else... Don't know why it's fallen off in recent years though- maybe they assume people are more likely to be out on Halloween now? *Case in point: I'm not sure that the correct response to: "Darling. Light, of my life. I'm not gonna hurt ya. You didn't let me finish my sentence. I said, I'm not gonna hurt ya. I'm just gonna bash your brains in. I'm gonna bash 'em right the fuck in..." is a giggle.

Carolyn - If you've not done your Amazon order yet, the dvd of my forthcoming film-club choice is about £4.97. But if you go and have a look, don't read the Customer & Amazon reviews, as they give away too much plot!
