I was Googling around for odds & ends on the older Hastings music scene, and found this page on the Clockwork Criminals (I've got a copy of the Bullshit Detector compilation on Crass Records that they were on): it's got some interesting photos of Hastings punk gigs at any rate... www.detour-records.co.uk/CLOCKWORK%20CRIMINALS.htm

On a similar note,
in recent months my dad has been compiling a list of bands and when / where they played in hastings, focusing mainly on the 60s and 70s. He suspected they may never be used but... he got a call on thursday from some bod at a tv production company making a show hosted by jo Brand on the music scene in hastings when she was growing up. He was asking questions like - when did Leo Sayer play the pier etc, and my Dad was able to provide all the info. Then yesterday this chop came into the library and took copies of the local paper articles from the time also.
Dad did not ask when the show would be on...

I've been in touch with a local historian called Jim Proudfoot who (and I might as well quote the article in Hastings Observer, December 15th 2006, p10) "...is researching a book about the history of popular music in Hastings from 1957 to the present day." I've offered to share the contents of the bulging archives (flyers, posters, local & national press-cuttings, listings mags, fanzines etc), and will see how much of a contribution us lot have made, according to his historians' perspective. Keep you informed!

His email was published in the newspaper article from last year, and he does reply, but rather than spread it about on the internet, I'll PM it to you...

Incidentally, if anyone requests it, I'm happy to post-up lists etc of any of the above-mentioned stuff I've got stored (eg. complete runs of Ultimate Alternative etc). Similarly, I'd make the effort to transcribe info about what's in my tape & CD-R boxes (mostly recording sessions & various live gigs) if anyone's got a burning desire to know the extant recordings of any Coastline or Dizzy Tiger-related bands.

I picked up a new stylophone the other day (the one with the MP3 in) and can now compare the old and new versions side by side for those desperate to know which is best..... *fzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz....* ...anyway, the old one sounds more mellow but the new version has two more sounds. One is a distorted overdriven synth/electric guitar sound (nice), the other an organ bass tone (okay). Good night

That is all well and good, but how do they both compare with the 350s?

Weeeeeeeeeeeell..... the 350's had an input for a record player (like a proto MP3 input on the new model), was duophonic, had extra effects (i.e. tremolo) and sported a photosensitive filter control (later to inspire the Roland D-Beam). My version was always out of tune across the octaves which may colour my assessment but, even with these extra features, it never came close to the originals 3 models in terms of sound or simplicity

i had to ask! I assume you removed one synth before bringing the stylophone in as per Caroline?!

Hrmmm. Something appears to have gone wrong with the 'one in, one out system', as Michael's purchased several million assorted electronic doodads over the past few years, and only one synth has left the flat, that I can remember... I've been told that rackable synths and drum machines weren't included in our origninal agreement, but to be honest, I think I'm being had...

"one keyboard in, one keyboard out". Stylophones, drum machines, analogue effects etc do not count

www.discogs.com - It's like a really anal record collectors' version of Wikipedia. Someone's added Dizzy Tiger on there courtesy of the Shitmat/Minimal Impact tape; whilst the Rashamon entry even includes Seb's Myspace URL... I wonder if he knows? I may, inevitably, be adding further info to it in the weeks to come.

If you want, check my recently added Facebook group 'Hastings & Rother Music Archive' - which is basically hosting scans of many of the flyers, setlists and posters I've acquired out & about over the years. I added about 50 new scans this afternoon, and that's only the tip of the iceberg.

How many times can I go to the unlimited salad cart at Harvester before feeling unwell? Two it seems.

All this material has now been added to The Archive sub-board, in five seperate threads (Witch Doctor, Cobweb, Aquarius, Pier & miscellaneous) if anyone fancies a look. Some fascinating gigs there.
