The current issue of Artrocker magazine (with the Young Knives on the cover, and a reasonable free cd) has the only substantial press-review of Brighton live that I've seen: a double-page spread with a couple of photos, with a high crossover between what their reviewers saw and what we saw.
There's also several articles on Oliva's friends The Violets, if you're interested.

I picked-up the Brighton Music Bible (£5.99, inc. free cd*) at the bar of the George in Trafalgar Street last night, a post-Brighton Live publication from the Brighton Music Network www.brightonmusic.net designed to be a handbook of Brighton bands, studios, venues etc. It's in no way exhaustive (not much in the way of electronica artists for a start), but a few people in our orbit make the A-Z (-A+M, This Project, Doctor Fonda, Jim Crow's Grave), and there's a good photo of 'The Flesh Happening' (actually Oliva & Del as The Flesh Machine) from their Brighton Live gig. (*Mainly featuring Brighton Live performers, eg Maths Class, Transformer, Restlesslist. 21 acts in all) Would people be interested in an Eastbourne-'Rother' edition, if we got a few people behind it?

Shame to report that Brighton Live returns next week, with, um, less bands, promoters, venues and days! The gigs are mainly across 3 days this time (Wed 24th - Fri 26th, plus some industry stuff on the Tues, and schools etc stuff on the Sat), with nothing standing-out in the listings (eg: no bands who've made any impression outside of Brighton really, and no interesting promoters' showcases). Even the media tips are largely of bands who were also tipped last year, and the odd bit of BIMM rubbish. There may be some interesting unknowns scattered around the bills (as there were last year), but I'm not optimistic at the moment! Still, it's all free again, so we'll go along anyway, and report back with anything exciting we see...

Goodness, I'd forgotten how Brighton Live co-incides with Freshers' Week. There was some frighteningly young-looking, and easily-impressed (by average bands), teeneagers about last night. Some of them looked a bit shell-shocked too!

Hi all (?), Just off out to Brighton Live again: the most interesting stuff looks like it's gonna be at the Latest Music Bar (formerly Joogleberry) - such as this lot www.myspace.com/thewinterclub . When we were there last night, the venue was giving away copies of the Brighton Music Bible book/cd I mentioned a few posts above (on Feb 10th), so if you want me to pick one up for you, text me this evening and I'll see if there's any left. stu x

Is anyone going to the Bee's Mouth tonight? Sweet sweet lies, Bitter Ruin and others are playing. Also Ben Griffith at The Providence opposite the Bees. I'm gonna be there with Jake.

It's a possibility: we've done 2 nights around the town centre now, so we might finish off with some gigs down Western Road way to make a change. Gonna listen to some MySpace's later just to make sure we're not gonna miss anything fabulous in town otherwise! I'll text you tonight if we're heading BeesMouth way.

Saw Bitter Ruin and Sweet Sweet Lies at the Bee's Mouth last night...both bands won't be around Brighton much longer i guess...so fucking good and original. Bitter Ruin were something else entirely, absolutely stunning! They are having their album launch at The Brunswick on October 27, i am going for sure. Anyone else?

www.myspace.com/bitterruin - I listened to them before going out on Friday, but it didn't appeal, so I'll skip their album launch. The Friday was a bit of a wash-out really: due to various band cancellations & schedule re-orderings, we didn't see any of the acts we were planning to, apart from a bit by The Dials, but that was only after someone else had pulled-out. They were ok in a mod/psych way - if you liked Catnip etc. I did pick up a couple of those Brighton Music Bible books for free in the Prince Albert though: I thought it might be handy for the Music Xchange to have one, and Reuben can have the other (it'll help him be a manager!)

Ok, so it's free Brighton Live gig time again next week (Tue-Sat) www.brightonlive.netOur plans include: Tue 29th Sep - Launch party (Grasscut & The Half Sisters) Wed 30th - Rendezvous Casino party, Brighton Marina (The Laylanas and more). Not sure if this is invite only, but if anyone wants to be my Plus One (Carolyn's working 'til later) then message me. - The Veloes at Mrs Fitzherberts pub, by Brighton Dome/Corn Exchange. The Veloes have technically split up, but Jonny Fitzpatrick reckons some of them should make it in some form. - Restlesslist, Casablanca Jazz Club, Middle Street (near the clock tower), 'cos they're pretty good. Thu 1st Oct - Not much for definate, but almost certianly we'll do Pink Narcissus at the Engine Room (seafront, near the West Pier) at the end of the night. Fri 2nd - Off to Random Fridays instead, although The Long Goodbye are at the Beesmouth over the road from our flat. Sat 3rd - We've got a birthday party to go to, and Brighton Live's all over bar the workshops. But following on from those (all at the Latest Music Bar, which was Joogleberry) in the evening is The Scene - a new psych club night run by the Bevis Frond, which should be good. Oh, and 'cos we're nosy, we're gonna try and check out some bands on the Wed & Thu in fancy places we've not visited (eg the new My Hotel near the Dome, and the Madame Geisha restuarant in East Street down in the Lanes). There's also music in some of the pubs we frequent anyway, and not necessarily in ones that ordinarily have live stuff, such as the lovely Regency Tavern near the Churchill Centre, so we'll aim for some of that too. Feel free to pop over & out.

Yes please Stu and everyone, come to our gig at The Bee's Mouth on FRiday, we are on at 8 o'clock so that will give you plenty of time to go elsewhere later. We need your support! It's an important gig for us and it would be nice to have some familiar faces there xxx

Alfie, the Random Fridays thing I'm going to tonight is in Bexhill, and starts at 7pm, so we're gonna miss your gig tonight, I'm afraid. I'm fairly Brighton Live'd out, it's been erratic and we missed loads of bands (see my Tweeted updates on twitter.com/eastmagazine ) Hope it's a good one at the Beesmouth anyway!
