This whole Mark Speight thing is a bit tragic.

Certainly is - I have a colleague at work who had to explain to her daughter yesterday why he was all over the news.

Death: Tristram Cary - electronic music innovator (the Phoenix Arts Centre's Ian Helliwell was a big fan), composer of superlative scores for Doctor Who (including 'The Daleks' original story, on BBC4 last week) and the Hammer film version of 'Quatermass & The Pit' (as you'll probably know, one of my all-time favourite films, partly due to the indescribably disturbing sound effects). www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho/s4/news/latest/080424_news_01

Oh - I feel sad about this as Ian (ou music teacher, as Stu said) was a big fan and I'm sure will be sad.

Thankee kindly folks! (And to those joining me in the park later for that truly British pastime of alfresco food consumption under a steely grey sky, I salute you. Bring a raincoat.)

Thank you! It was a lovely day- picnic, playpark shenanigans (we waited until the children had all gone home!), and the pub.
Can I have another one next week? ;D

It's like the Ken Dodd joke:
"Bo Diddley died." "Did he?" "No, Diddley."
But less funny.

Nick- we're getting round to thinking about booking somewhere to stay for the Dorset leg of yours and Melinda's impending nuptuals...I know there's info on your website thingy (am v. impressed with your organisation, btw!), but it's difficult to judge these things if you don't know the area...
Off the top of your head (and from another continent!) can you think of anywhere nice (and close) to the festivities that we could book?
Or is Bridport wee enough that just somewhere fairly central should do?
(NB- We'll be the ones arriving with suitcases under our eyes! Michael starts study sessions for his PHD the day before, so we'll be travelling the morning of the wedding. Oof.)
Edited to add: Enough brackets for ya? (Sheesh.)

Caroline - I'll give you a call tonight on this as have looked into it loads. We've booked within Bridport. Nick's given me some useful info on all this. Speak later x

Bridport i small so anywhere is walkable. There is also West Bay one mile down the road which has more hotels b&bs etc, and is by the sea, but you live by the sea so this selling point is probably not that interesting! An on-line search and a couple of phone calls should set you up. The George Hotel is the nearest but is probably booked up. Its super quaint (twee) there so most places are nice.
