A MANIFESTO OF SORTS. Draft 300602
The Dizzy Tiger Music Co operates at the far edge of independent music making. We operate as a collective of varying numbers. None of us expect any recognition of our creativity, either locally, nationally or even internationally, although we have left various trails through our previous activties that can quickly lead the curious into communication with us. The musical (and related) arts we create are neither purposely obtuse, nor deliberately populist, they exist purely as events an must be judged accordingly. Our previous experiences in different areas of the (vast expanse of) the international music scene has shown us the importance of following our own paths rather than compromise our endeavours in the distant hope of being hauled aboard the luxury liner of financial reward. The Dizzy Tiger Music Co believes, however, in adaptation of any and all pre-existing musical forms to serve the purpose of the pleasure of creation and performance, and that the discovery of alternate processes and sounds is an inevitable and welcome result of the activity, whether purposeful or unexpected. Methods of music creation favoured by the members of the Dizzy Tiger Music Co include improvisation, editing, sampling, single-takes, use of unfamiliar instruments, detuning, field recording, untutored singing, found sound, spoken word (poetry and conversation, stream of conciousness and declamation), space. Bi-Products of the creative processes will occasionally be distributed to the potential public through non-exclusive means, such as photocopies, individually dubbed cassettes and CDRs, free concerts, although other methods will be considered should the audience require it in order to communicate with us. Our motivating force is our faithless love for friends unmet, the love that keeps us going with fantastical hope. We have only ourselves to be afraid of, when we are irrationally doubtful of the love around the world; by expressing these fears through our creativity we may overcome them, and potentially assist others to overcome theirs. On other occasions our creativity may bring results that could be seen as (for example) frivolous, tuneless, pointless - but we do not see such reactions as criticisms, for this is also a reflection of aspects of all of us involved as creators and receptors. These moments of communication between us and the listener are as valid as any others we may have otherwise hoped to achieve. The Dizzy Tiger Music Co is intended to become a long-term operation, with different periods of growth and contraction, intensity and faintness, over many years. We have no particular achievments which we feel must occur by some near date, and in fact some of our projects by their nature cannot be completed fot months, years, sometimes even decade to come. We are all well aware of the finite amount of time we all have to investigate our creative abilities, so it would be self-harming to impose time limits upon ourselves before we even begin on a creative adventure. In a related manner, it may occasionally happen that the Dizzy Tiger Music Co may consider it appropriate to draw from the archives of previously published writing and illustration, and the many hours of recorded and video material predating the formation of the company, in order to illuminate certain working methods and achievments, for it is not the fault of either ourselves or our potential audience that links between us were not made at the original times of recording (or, sometimes, release). Life is far too brief to withold the results of anyone's previous creativity for the sake of fixing it in a specific time. Wherever possible, the Dizzy Tiger Music Co will work with those who otherwise have little opportunity to be involved with collaborative arts, or with those whose activity already shows a distinctive (potential) voice and view. We cannot, at least at this outset, pretend that we have either the easiest or best ideas in order to get a participant's contributions heard outside of our own sphere at that particular time, but they may at least have some possible satisfaction in having made contributions to a long term artistic project, and in return they will also recieve credit and love for our lives and, we all hope, beyond. A final note: the Dizzy Tiger Music Co does not run on money. We have almost no money, and that which we do manage to find is perpetually owed to the operators of the systems of finance. Therefore, there is no financial reward for participation, and no financial rewards are sought by anyone involved in the company. Instead, the Dizzy Tiger Music Co is run on the love we have for ourself, our friends, and the world in general, and the experience of the love of the world is the reward we recieve. This love is the love of all classes, nationalities, sexualities, species and faiths (for examples) and the defence of this love is an intrinsic part of the operation of Dizzy Tiger. We remain, then, vigilant and questioning, and aware that we may often be misled or wrong. To these ends, we may therefore occasionally investigate areas of creative expression we would otherwise mark as alien or antithical to our creative zone, to discover and expose other truths and falsehoods that lie within them. So in certain senses, it can be stated that nothing we see or do can be taken at face value, at that our own efforts may well be misguided or misrepresented. This is always part of the process and results. It's funny too.
