The online version of our old mucker Adam McNaught-Davis' Eastbourne listings mag, reasonably titled East Magazine, is up and running at last, over at www.eastmagazine.co.ukAs well as tonight's Rumiko/Tim Williams/The Late Greats gig at Via, I see on the site that Tim Williams is playing again this Sunday at the Under Ground Theatre over there, supporting Iain Archer (sometime Snow Patrol collaborator, longstanding solo artist, etc) if anyone's interested in going. It still seems that Hastings has the edge on "the new Brighton" (hmm...) possibilities, but it'd be great if Adam and his lot could continue to strengthen Eastbourne's standing - three happening(!) towns in a row (Hastings, Eastbourne, Brighton) along this coastal stretch can only be benficial to us all (I'm subsuming Bexhill into Hastings for the sake of argument). West of Brighton: Worthing (where Colin from Edgeworld has been promoting gigs; home of The Ordinary Boys etc), stretching away through all those towns we never visit 'til you enter Portsmouth & Southampton's gravitiational field, and a different scene altogether. East of Hastings: open countryside and marshland, the satellite of Rye (hello to Alfie, Paul etc), then eventually entering the Folkestone/Dover outpost, and a different scene again. You know what I mean.

Rumiko were in Eastbourne last night and very nice it was too, everyone seemed very well heeled and smartly dressed.
Good show, I hope we will get over there more often, I might even work out how the poxy one-way system works one day. There does seem to be an emerging scene over there and it would be good if some of their bands looked East towards Hastings occasionally rather towards the West and the gaudy spectacle that is Brighton.

I think a (very sensible) reason why so many Eastbourne kids end up going over to Brighton rather than Hastings of an evening, is simply that you can get trains back from Brighton to Eastbourne and Hastings well after closing time (which, of course, has just been abolished: it's taking me a while to get used to this idea!), but there's no trains making the reverse journey from Hastings westwards after about 10pm, or thereabouts. So they'd get stuck! (Honourary exceptions in the past being Paula/Abi/Clare/Pip/Suzi&Jane's crews; and how good was it to see some of the Murphy's last night..) At least all our Bexhill friends were fairly capable of walking the few miles back home after their nights out in Hastings in times past. But yeah, there needs to be more cross-traffic between Hastings and Eastbourne: you lot keep in with Simon's bunch, and I'll keep Adam informed of what we're all up to from time to time. nb: I was the only person from Hastings to go over for this gig (Katherine was there for Simon's girlfriend's birthday), so the complaint can work both ways. We really ought to make more of an effort to support Eastbourne stuff too.

In fairness I can understand Hastings gig goers not showing up last night as they will have seen Rumiko and Tim very recently at The Smuggs. My point was not so much about Eastbourne punters not making the journey west but rather their bands (the only exceptions that come to mind being Noxious and The Riverclub both of whom never play anywhere other than The Crypt). It is to the detriment of all concerned if links aren't forged.
Simon is a great advocate for the band and I would like to bring more of the other DTMC bands to his attention. Whilst Izumi seems resolutely aiming for angsty indie bands in Simon's capacity as promoter his church is a lot broader.

Adam McN-D has come good on his coverage of the gig @ Via - www.eastmagazine.co.uk/pix/pix_view.asp?aid=18Includes Michael enjoying an oily rag (oh no! the wife's gonna kill me) and my favourite; a shot of the DJ running for cover with hands over ears during one of my "my solos are my trademark" moments. Also it has come to my attention through my myspace connections that there is what looks like a promising night at Namaskar Rooms in Eastbourne on 10th December. Burrito Deluxe - Playing country/alt./americana krautrock folk/neo/freak punk (real not plastic) new wave post punk psychedelia electronica hip hop jazz dub. It might be worth a look.

Dean & Jim down Revolver tonight, for those passing near Hastings Old Town... I never know when Dean's got his other solo Eastbourne gigs coming up - perhaps someone with Eastbourne connections could flag them up here in future?

I don't think any are planned as he pretty much exclusively played at Bar Blue and they moved the PA around which he didn't like and as a consequence hasn't done it since. That and the fact he's got the residency at Revolver and it fulfils a similar function.

Oh, ok. I was too skint to go over for Iain Archer on Sunday in the end: I went down Smugglers instead with a view to catch our Alfie, but foolishly stuck around and saw some of (brace yourselves..) Liquor And Poker as well. I've not been the same since.

A bit by-the-by this one, but in the current issue (10) of Everett True's Plan B magazine (www.planbmag.com - still only available down this way in Mr Pickwick's, next to Sainsburys, in Bexhill, as far as I've found), the great Neil Kulkarni flips his wig over 12" Matter's single Sunshine Coast (HID Productions) - which is some kind of Eastbourne hip-hop, I gather. Anyone wanna check it out? I would LOVE there to be loads of decent local hip-hop appearing in Hastings, there's gotta be some likelihood of this occurring, surely?

So far I have not been able to find any decent venues in eastbourne, or artists that seem to come here!! Its nice to know my town has some good shows then? I just travel to brighton/hastings/bexhill/london on the train to see my shows! Getting to bexhill is the easiest, as its 15 minutes on the train and you can get away without paying in the evening. The train times suck completely though, trains from hastings/bexhill/brighton to eastbourne (latest is about 11.20-30) and from london its 12.05. I wish we had later trains running to eastbourne.

Though we don't get over there much ourselves, it looks like East Magazine, the Izumi Records label, and venues such as the Namaskar Rooms, all have the best interests of non-commercial Easthourne punters at heart... Best of luck!

Seems you are right stu! My parents found a flyer from saturday night at namaskar "jellied jazz" and thought I might like it. A shame they didnt find it in time for the show.
Their website doesnt list future events, I guess Ill have to check east magazine. Hopefully the shows are free, as I dont know any of the local stuff and it may be hit and miss.

Depends what your tastes are but pretty much anything Izumi Records gets involved with is normally a cut above the amateur hour bands that tend to make going to see anything local a bit of a hit and miss affair. profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=26646087Whilst they aren't promoting anything in Eastbourne in the very near future they do so quite regularly so they are worth keeping an eye on. They also are home to The Late Greats who are from the 'bourne and loads of noisy guitar fun. You can also do a bit of research on the East website as they have an online stereo thingy so you maybe able to avoid some of the iffier local gigs!

Ah, but if you'd only mentioned country-rock!
Harpers sounds right up your street though. That street being the A259, obviously.

Really cant stand any of it From what I have seen there does seem to be alot of good stuff at harpers! I missed the four tet/caribou show, because I went to the concorde 2 one instead, but the upcoming show seems great! And I have also missed the mr cooper/sketchie shows, who both seem great local artists A little pissed I didnt go see mr cooper, I had ticket for coldcut instead and what a shit show that was! The worst show I have been to, and probably ever will do! Total noise pollution to the ears, apart from about 3-4 tracks in 3 hours +
