Wrong, Alfie! Wrong! Wrong! Wrong!
But I salute the courage of your convictions nonetheless.
Count me in for the gig!

thats just before my birthday...in fact that could double up as my annual pre-chrimbo getting stuck on the mainland in the fog trip... or coming over to see my folks(and they can babysit by then!) as they might describe it... count me in!

Why is it wrong? I hate him...arrogant bastard, can't sing, shit guitarist, made a lot of money out of talking about a lot of shitty things about England and making people believe it was good. Did you ever see the DVD of the Mermaid Avenue sessions (album he made with Wilco about Woody Guthrie's music) ....what a knob. And if you read the book about Wilco, there's further proof in there that he is a cunt. If Jeff Tweedy thought he was a dick (being the LOVELY Jeff Tweedy), then Billy must be a prick. I take Jeff's word for it. Not to mention when i saw Billy play alongside Emmylou, Joan Baez, Steve Earle and Chrissie Hynde at Summer Sundae in Leicester....it was the "landmine" tour they did togetherand it was like "what the fuck is he doing on that stage with legends like that"! As well as that, he made an arse of himself

National treasure. Genius songwriter. Lousy singer admittedly but you know what they say about glass houses. Think of him as a British Steve Earle - he's got every right to get on a stage with just about anyone. Don't care what Tweedy thinks, I've got Bill's records and seen him live and the Bard of Barking rules.

When I watched the mermaid avenue film it was Jeff Tweedy that came off as the cock (I seem to remember that Guthrie's family weren't too happy with him either). I watched this film before listening to WILCO and his childish behaviour almost put me off them (I guess he wasn't in a great space at the time). Caroline and I will be at the white rock for sure :-)

I love Billy. He used to be my friend and Alfie I can assure you you would get along. He's a gentle, funny, lovely passionate man and so are you, so really, I can't see there's an issue.
I would love to come. Hmmmm let me see.

NB- when booking tickets, ignore all info in the Hastings Observer article (actually, not bad advice generally )- according to the White Rock and Live Nation websites, the gig doesn't exist. Following the link from the page Stu put up earlier in the thread takes you to gigsandtours.com, though, and they can apparently find their arse with both hands and a map. Which is nice. Squeeee!

Sorry to harp on about this but the idea that BB got where he is by saying a lot of shitty things about England is so profoundly wrong. He is a patriot who was/is outraged by some of the things done in the name of Britain by the powerful, but fundamentally he is someone who is incredibly proud of our heritage and many aspects of our national character.

According to my songbook of Billy Bragg's 'Back To Basics' (International Music Publications, 1985 - with 'Back To Basics Audio Aid/Play In A Day The Billy Bragg Way' tuition flexi!), he (last?) played Hastings on 11th Feb 1984 at Rumours. Anyone know where this was, or what it is now?

I checked this out with Mark Richards (see my Facebook wall) - yes, The Crypt was briefly renamed Rumours. 80's classy! I'm now picturing the Wilkes brothers in full Steve Strange make-up, which is probably unfair...

I was just searching to find out when the gig at Rumours in Hastings took place. I'm not a massive fan but it was a fantastic gig and according to Billy "the first night of Bragg-Mania"
Rumours changed it's name to The Crypt a few years later and is still going I believe.

Cheers Steve, yeah, that old Billy Bragg book has a long list of his gigs to date in (no setlists though, unfortunately).
