We've been given the option of a possible six-part sequence of reviews of Dizzy Tiger-related releases to be run in the local press, thanks to John Hill's enthusiasm for the music scene here. I've got to email back regarding the feasability of this in the next few days, and thought it'd be fair to post my favoured shortlist of six (all current or ex-Hastings artists). Your comments and suggestions would be welcome over the weekend! 1. Rashamon - Frightened By The Familiar (cd album) & new single. 2. Axis Deer - Milo Stein/Holinsky (cd reissue) and new ep. 3. Minimal Impact/Frontier Telegraph - split cassette. (I've at least got the MI side already!)[Actually, if we're aiming for a local interest side of things, I'd probably substitute this release if necessary: there's loads of stuff to be told about the music and history of Minimal Impact, but that's outside of local press interest; and I dunno if we could carry it on Mikey's involvement in the Frontier Telegraph side alone, seeing as Rumiko have had plenty of press already, and it'd feel a bit nepotistic!] 4. The Flesh Happening - current ep, plus anything new they might get together for us. Plus John's suggestions: 5. Regular John (would be new ep or live material) 6. Tim Hoyte (would be The Nothing Machine cd album, unless anything new is forthcoming?) Obviously, a lot of items on this list need to be recorded or collated, and the series could run from September, so we'd have to pull together to sort it all out. Also, I'd prefer not to have an all-male list, and (without trying to offend anyone mentioned above) would be happy to bump some people off the list in favour of Volunteers, Rachel Fisher etc, again depending on whether they're happy with their current material. I'll be on the phone, text and email the next few days trying to pull something together for this, so any of you artists who want to help me out please be quick!

Slept on this one (interrupted by friends on the phone and cats on the bed) and came up with a different shortlist, whom I've contacted today by text. Now reckon should be Rashamon, Regular John, The Flesh Happening, Volunteers, Rachel Fisher and Burn Burn Burn, all of whom make very different music, are interesting characters, and have all contributed positively to the musical and artistic communities of Hastings (and, in some cases, subsequently Brighton). No offence to Tim, but I'm going to suggest that he and Flying Marrows deserve a seperate feature around the Mrs Yarringtons-sponsored Cherry Gardens tour shortly. No offence to Axis Deer either, a feature on the reissues may just be a bit too backward-looking, and I dunno how publicly Michael would want to expose that music (as he didn't feel comfortable about the chance to try it out live when I mentioned it earlier this year). Actually, since revising that list and texting the artists, Michael went past the shop with his skateboard, so hopefully we'll sort out the cd's soon anyway, and see how he feels about press. Anyway, I'll try and speak to everyone about all this over the weekend, said I'd get back to John Hill early part of next week. Fortunately I'm off work all week. Will be over in Brighton for some of that time, either side of the Rashamon gig, so may come knocking on doors looking for demos! Again, your comments would be welcomed. Stu x

hi. message board fun aHOY. i'll talk to the boys about the possibility of this over the next few days. we're all having quite a disparate summer - russell in hastings, michael in loondon, me alternating between nutso work and imaginary americans, and steve in the usual CNN insomniac haze. we played in london recently and it all sounded good, althpugh the stage was so small that\ we couldn;t all fit on it, so michael and russell stood offstage left and right and steve was in a sort of drums pit behind me stage centre with a gigantic fan blowing from behind him. result: i was the only person visible onstage, and looked like stevie nicks (well, hairwise). other than that, all was fun.
love to all.

Yeah, bumped into Russel quite a few times in George Street these last few weeks. Shame that London gig went by already, I'd love to have gone, even though realistically I'd probably have been unable to...I'll suggest to John Hill that it'd be good to cover Volunteers, but if the rest of you aren't up for it there's obviously others he can write about, and he may have his own wish list regardless. As with many others on my own list though, I think there's interesting activities and attitudes from Volunteers that would be worth spreading through the medium of local press. No pressure, no obligation etc.

Unfortunately our resident homophobe decided to free himself of years of guilt and self-loathing and came out after he left Rumiko so it would appear that we were queer-ish but nobody knew.

Just to update everyone on this: John Hill rang today, turns out he didn't recieve the lengthy email I sent him on Monday, so I've had to re-send it (fingers crossed it gets through this time!) Sorry I've not been able to give you any other news on it in the meantime, but there you go.

Despite all the technical hiccups, John is still willing to start this series of articles with a review of Sun In Wintertime in the 16th Sep edition of the Hastings Observer, so long as I can sort him out with the subsequent 6 cds to review sometime in the next week. I'll be doing all I can to arrange this, so all your co-operation would be appreciated, ta. Try and catch up with everyone over the next few days to see what we can do, x

If John Hill, or anyone else interested, is reading this today, I should have the following cds ready for review purposes by the end of the day (hopefully!) - Rashamon - Frightened By The Familiar album. - Burn Burn Burn - The Weekend's Ashes single. - The Flesh Happening - sampler ep (coming in the post today..) - Volunteers - demo ep. - Rachel North (aka Rachel Fisher) - some demos, once I've downloaded the mp3s she's now sent me.
Regular John are still recording their 2nd ep, but if a 6th cd is required for review in the meantime, Marcus and I should hopefully have sorted the Axis Deer album by tonight. Incidentally, this should also mean the proper copies of Sun In Wintertime can be readied for later in the week too. Updates to follow, cheers for everyone's patience.

Unless something crops up at his end, I'll be catching up with John Hill tomorrow afternoon to organise the articles. Should also have said, Rachel's stuff is being done under the name Tigersnack. See you later.

Done: got all cds mentioned above readied in time; Michael (Axis Deer) and Del (Burn Burn Burn) sat in and made useful interjections; should hopefully start going into paper a week later, from 23rd Sep. Possibly accompanied by slightly bemused photo from outside FILO. Now have minidisc cable from Michael too, so another step closer to the Axis Deer and compilation cds too.

John has come through with a couple of features on the label in today's Hastings Observer, which you should of course buy; hanging-about-outside-the-FILO photo included. For you lot out-of-town, I'll post the articles up on a new thread this evening. Don't worry, it's all good..

Are Burn, Burn, Burn still a going concern? I thought Del had called time on it and was working with Lo-Fi's spin off Technically Men. By the by BBB's drummer Simon has started a new label Izumi Records which has the genius idea of selling vinyl singles with a code that you enter on their website to obtain a digital version thus getting around that old I like the record by how do I get it on my Ipod/burn a copy for the car/my mates etc. Oh and every release comes with a comic featuring the band. www.izumirecords.com/

Burn Burn Burn are a going concern in the context of the articles, which is to promote their Weekends Ashes single and introduce them all to the readership (despite sending promos and news stories in to the paper over the years, the last substantial press they had was back when My Astro Lover were going. The whole Candys time of publishing deals, singles on the radio, tours, visiting the US etc got completely passed over, so as far as a lot of Observer readers will be concerned this will be thier first exposure to them). And yes, as always, there's the usual changing the line-up and name thing going on at the moment, but for the moment the single is out and needs a push! Technically Men does seem likely to take up a lot of Del's time in the near future (we're trying to get a Dizzy Tiger ep sorted from them before they sign a deal), but that that won't be Del's exclusive focus (I'm not sure he ever really lets a lot of these bands go; he was telling me they're still mixing The Candys album too!) I didn't know the Izumi site was up yet, thanks for the pointer. Aren't you lot gonna do a single with them?

It has been mooted, not too sure of the detail. Had a chat with Si the other day and he is operating at slightly higher level than most small singles labels as has PR and publicists and quite reasonable distribution into the High Street. I'm up for it because it looks like the only way we are going to get a vinyl release and old fashioned though it is it seems a bit more like a "real" record than on cd.
