Unreleased live recording by Donkey Kong Jr (later renamed Rumiko Jr).
On 22nd December 2004, Donkey Kong Jr played one of their regular gigs at now-defunct Hastings pub venue The Smugglers. We taped the full set onto a C90 cassette using a Fisher Price tape recorder as follows (cover versions are noted in brackets):
Sweep The Ashes Away / We Are Going To Be Friends (The White Stripes) / Flown Too Far To Come Back / House Whiskey / Rome / Human Highway (Neil Young) / Draggin' (Creedence Clearwater Revival) / Keep It Going On / On A Hinge / Show Him The Way / We Get Lost / Get Up Jake (The Band) / Stay For A While / Lonely Friend / Some Days / The Monkey Song (The Mountain Goats) / Bleed A Little Longer / Good Ol' Boys: Theme From 'The Dukes Of Hazzard' (Waylon Jennings) / Venom Spits / Lord It's Good.
By cutting out all the covers and the lengthier between-song gaps, a 60 minute cut-down live cassette of the gig was prepared with this track-listing:
Sweep The Ashes Away / Flown Too Far To Come Back / House Whiskey / Rome / Keep It Going On / On A Hinge / Show Him The Way / We Get Lost / Stay For A While / Lonely Friend / Some Days / Bleed A Little Longer / Venom Spits / Lord It's Good.
Five copies were dubbed (with labels carrying the catalogue number DTMC09) for the approval of the band but, partly because of the recording quality and partly because so many of the songs were still unreleased, the group declined the offer to give it a full release. We reassigned the catalogue number to the second Dizzy Tiger Music Co compilation tape 'Sun In Wintertime' instead.
Studio recordings of Sweep The Ashes Away, House Whiskey, Rome, Bleed A Little Longer and Lord It's Good had previously appeared on Donkey Kong Jr's debut album 'Broken Down, Whiskey Sound' (self-released, 2004), which was subsequently reissued by the Spanish label Rock Indiana under the Rumiko Jr name in 2005.
Studio recordings of On A Hinge, Mountain Song, Some Days, Lonely Friend, We Get Lost and Keep It Going On were recorded for a planned Rumiko Jr album ('The Great Western Lie') which was shelved in favour of an entirely different album 'Haunting The Townsfolk' (self-released, 2009). A promotional CD-R of three songs from 'The Great Western Lie' (Some Days, Carve My Way and Mountain Song) was circulated by the band in 2006 and 'Mountain Song' appeared on the Dizzy Tiger compilation 'Anti' (2007).
Both 'Broken Down, Whiskey Sound' and 'Haunting The Townsfolk' were reissued on digital platforms in 2020, along with a reissue of songwriter Deano Adams' solo album 'Lost Songs And Monkey Bikes' (self-released, 2012).
Rumiko Jr digitised the Smugglers tape recordings in 2020 (and some may yet be released by the band) and this explanatory note was added to the Dizzy Tiger catalogue in 2021 as part of the Coastline Records 30th anniversary celebrations.
Incidentally, Donkey Kong Jr's debut EP for Coastline Records ('More Than One Way Of Drowning', 2001) has now been reissued by the band under the Rumiko Jr name on their Bandcamp - here
In the meantime, a short YouTube playlist is available - here
