The GPoS are booking.... DINOSAUR Jr!!
Greetings once more from The Gilded Palace of Sin,
We hope you are all well, dear Sinners. If for some reason you're not, we hope to cheer you a tad with news of our next show - featuring two bands that may be new names to you, both making their first appearances in Brighton. This is the first presentation of a massive month for us: Not only do we have four fantastic shows lined-up for your delectation, but there is also an important announcement to be made in November that concerns big changes ahead at GPoS Towers. That can wait awhile, though, as this is why we're with you today:

www.wegottickets.co.uk/event/12166 What we have ourselves here is a cracking double-header featuring two emerging bands producing brilliant music early in their respective careers, and turning a lot of heads - ours included - because of it. First up to show you why will be THE LOW LOWS:
Originating in New York City but now based in Athens, Georgia, this startling outfit formed from cult miserablists PARKER & LILY, who released two wondrous, pitch-dark albums under that moniker. The band's new name was, we understand, intended as the title for the 3rd album, but has stuck as preferable following the romantic break-up of core members PARKER NOON and LILY WOLFE. And as THE LOW LOWS, they have delivered a "set-piece of heartbreak songs" in Fire on the Bright Sky - a definite contender for those large-looming end-of-year charts, both musically and in the Most Disturbing Artwork category!
Released by Monotreme, a London-based independent label observant Sinners will have noted we are very fond of (Thee More Shallows, Ral Partha Vogelbacher and 65daysofstatic signalling why), Fire on the Bright Sky is a haunting and very beautiful collection of songs. The most convenient touchstone is At Dawn-era My Morning Jacket, where everything is drenched in reverb. It's a ghostly, melancholy sound, but one that pulls you right into it's dark world and keeps you fascinated. It's also possible to identify Yo La Tengo's more twisted balladry, the spookier aspects of Will Oldham's bulging catalogue and Neil Young circa Tonight's The Night in THE LOW LOWS' gorgeous, fuzzy noise.
It's kinda country-ish, with high lonesome vocal and weeping pedal-steel echoing the overall sadness of sound, but then again we can imagine those that appreciate the more 'shoegazing' type of indie rock lapping this stuff up. Having found appreciative audiences on tours with My Morning Jacket, Arab Strap, Interpol and Stephin Merritt, they obviously have wide appeal. We love THE LOW LOWS' music simply because it's beautiful. Pick up the album, head straight for track 4 - St. Neil - and you'll see exactly why. Trust us, this band is unmissable.
www.thelowlows.net "Amandine roam across a vast and chilly plain, tumbling guitars and graceful bearing aligning them with the windswept Americana of Sun Kil Moon, Songs:Ohia or pre-Z My Morning Jacket":
So says Pitchfork Media concerning our headliners this evening, and it's a fairly accurate description of this fine band. But what it doesn't mention is how typical AMANDINE is of the gorgeous roots music steadily streaming from their native Sweden - and Northern Europe in general. If you have experienced the joys of Christian Kjellvander (including his Loosegoats / Songs of Soil bands), St. Thomas, Nicolai Dunger, Midnight Choir, Mattias Hellberg, Tobias Froberg, Thomas Dybdhal, José Gonzalez, Motorpsycho and Christer Knutsen, for example, you will appreciate what we're talking about. If you haven't, you need to hear these artists!
Musicians from this part of the world have an uncanny knack with killer melodies and epic arrangements, perhaps reflective of the grandeur of rural Scandinavia. AMANDINE is no exception. Formed in the town of Gavle in 2001 with the intention of producing "pop with country undertones", AMANDINE has had a stuttering existence until the last couple of years. Originally calling themselves Wichita Linemen (!), the band has had various personnel changes until finding a solid line-up. It is this line-up, plus a couple of guests, that we're delighted will be playing for us this evening.
AMANDINE signed to Brighton label FatCat (Nina Nastasia, Tom Brosseau, Múm, Sigur Ros, Animal Collective et al) in 2004, releasing debut album This Is Where Our Hearts Collide last year and 6-track EP Waiting For The Light To Find Us just a few weeks back. Bringing their majestic country / pop sound to their label town for the first time, OLOF GIDLOF (vocals / guitars), ANDREAS HEDSTROM (bass / vocals), ANDREAS BERGQVIST (drums) and JOHN ANDERSSON (piano / accordion) will be joined by violinist KRISTINA LUNDIN and backing singer KERSTIN WIKSTROM to perform material from both releases. We think you're going to like it. A lot ...
