Next Sunday afternoon, 3-5pm, De La Warr Pavilion:
Melting Vinyl present Guillemots live.
They're so-so, but it is free and on a Sunday, so we might as well go!

Oh, you do have to pick up your free tickets in advance though (from the De La Warr itself, I assume: Rounder in Brighton are holding some too).
Also free, on Saturday 26th August, 7.30pm: Acid Brass, with The Williams Fairey Band. Essential!

Hey howdy,
Have been asked by our Bexhill correspondent (aka Stu) to inform you that the Guillemots (who they?) have cancelled- dunno if the event is going ahead without them, or what's happening...am sure Stu will provide more detail later.
So if anyone was getting their hopes up, sorry 'bout that.
I personally hadn't heard of them until this weekend, but I'm out of touch with 'the kids' by a good 10 years, I think!

That's a shame - although makes my weekend a lot cheeper.
Oh - is anyone else getting a security check message when they try to leave a message?

The Proboards company seems to have introduced security checks (ie those random letter/number strings to type-in as well as your posting) in order to combat all those gobbledegook-URL spam threads: this seems to be working, as I've not had to delete any from the boards for a few weeks now. If you're logged-in as normal, you won't get the security check come up.
Guillemots are a new group signed to the independent Fantastic Plastic label (see also Help She Can't Swim): however, their specific records are coming out via some kind of pressing/distribution deal with Polydor. Guillemots are getting minor chart hits at the moment, enough to get them onto Top Of The Pops according to the Fantastic Plastic website: talk about cutting it fine!

Excellent: the Acid Brass performance takes place as part of a major Jeremy Deller retrospective exhibition at the De La Warr, from 22nd July - 17th September. I'm excited anyway.

Things are looking up at the De La Warr. I wasn't sure when they reopened, but have actually visited more in the last few months than I had for a couple of years. And me nan loves it, and let's face it - if the oldies don't love it, it will fail.

Bit of a giveaway from the current (Oct - Dec) De La Warr programme:
"Brighton to Bexhill Film Bus. A coach will pick up film buffs from Brighton, taking them to Bexhill and back. On the journey there will be screenings of 'Smart Alec' (filmed in Pevensey) and the pilot for 'Gallivant', along with commentary by director Andrew Kotting. Sat 2 December, 2.30pm pick up from Pool Valley, Brighton, 9.45pm pick up outside DLWP to return."
And this benefits the Council Tax payers of Bexhill how?
Meanwhile, the back of the catalogue features a black & white photo of the crowd watching the Acid Brass performance from the balconies. Everyone's in silhouette: prize for finding me (or a likely approximation)!

Rufus' band playing outside on the De La Warr's terrace, sometime after 4pm tomorrow, if people are about. According to the Bexhill Festival Of Music program, they're backing a woman who works at the Pavilion: anyone we know?

Some of the Bank Holiday De La Warr Pavilion acts are on tonight at the Concorde2's At Home By The Sea fest, so if we see them and they're actually any good (and Peggy Sue & The Pictures nee Pirates have a lot of ground to make up on that score...) we'll let you know.

Chris Cook (Hot Roddy) is doing a Same Actor set one Friday evening at the De La Warr next month (7-10pm, 22nd May, I think). We're intending on heading over for the weekend, and starting off with that gig, if people want to come and join us there. Details on the East Soapbox and probably the new mag.

Just a prompt for this one: Same Actor and T-Toe free gig at the De La Warr tonight, with visuals from mimimal_vector from Spirit Of Gravity. We're heading over with Geoff, proabably won't get there 'til about 9pm though. I think Adam from East, and Jason from Deepkiss/ASYLUM are popping along for it too. I should have some copies of On The Town for people too, if that helps swing anyone along. Gotta head back to Brighton afterwards though, so won't be around for Doctor Fonda at the Monkey, or Rumiko at Smugs the next day. Hopefully we'll both be back in Hastings the following weekend, once we've been paid, for Reuben's Smugglers promotion on the Saturday. Ok.

Re Reuben's night at the Smugglers this coincides with Hayley's launch party for The Daisy Room, there is talk about Reuben re-scheduling so we don't split the audience for each event.

Anyone up for The Handsome Family + Smoke Fairies @ De La Warr tonight? Spoke to Deano about them and he reckons it's a winner.
Also maybe we could get them down Smugglers for a bit of Rumiko action after?!

i'll take them if sue wants to go and no-one else is grabbing them. You're welcome to have them Carrie - I should be in town tomorrow evening, so I'll pop them in at your flat. I'd come over tonight for Rumiko, but we've agreed to meet up with Charlie in Brighton while he's over (and shortly before he departs these shores permanently).

The Thomas Truax/Sound Intermedia-play-Stockhausen/Shelley Parker Random Friday event this weekend was ridiculously good fun (I might try and get Carolyn's phone clip of Truax covering Falling from the Twin Peaks soundtrack onto YouTube this week). I know most of us have made it over at some point or other, but the rest of you should try and make a point of getting there soon. Anyway, here's some downloadable stuff from last month's event, from the M-O-T-H Presents 'Plinth' segment of the evening. The Quicktime voxpops video (give it about a minute to download, it will get there) begins with Maya chatting very brightly about the performance we'd just seen, and my own faltering contribution (courtesy of too much Peroni) turns up a few talking heads later. Look out for our yourselves milling around the bar too. [EDIT: Actually, you can also see an edited version of the above, along with some footage of the actual performance, in higher quality on M-O-T-H's Vimeo page here.)

Remember that this weekend's free De La Warr gigs (Fence Collective on Sat, Willkommen Collective on Sun) are afternoon ones, between 3-7pm on the bandstand. Both are followed by films projected on the outside of the building (the Zidane doc on Sat, Son Of Ranbow on Sun). De Le Warr's details here. And it's Random Fridays later, with the Coastal Currents launch party on the roof. Should be fun, and I think it's the final one of the season too.
