I first noticed the term 'Rovverbeat' used in the Hastings Observer this week, in relation to the band Youngplan (Dale Weeks et al) at a recent gig at Heroes (p35, 'Local Talent Showcased'), and that paper's Richard Morris used it in an email to me today. Though Richard is a likely suspect for coining the word, has anyone heard this phrase used to describe the local scene before at all? I'm quite fond of generic terms, but what do you lot think of it? And what phrase would you use otherwise?

I think it's a Youngplan creation - their myspace blog has a bit about the Rother sound lumping Rumiko in with themselves and the Ra under the banner of "If it ain't Rother then don't bother". Don't think much of it meself, as someone else on the receiving end of lazy pigeon holing by geography once said, "It ain't where yer from, it's where yer at."

Going by the number of professional photographers/bits of promo material at last night's Mumm-Ra/Youngplan/Restlesslist gig, I reckon there may be more to this Rovverbeat stuff (a term Mumm-Ra claimed onstage to have recently invented...) than meets the eye!

Just checked my emails: Rotherbeat (note revised spelling) doesn't appear to be sweeping the nation just yet...

Youngplan have got a 7" coming out, and are supporting Mumm-Ra throughout their April/May national tour. I think it's safe to assume they've been signed then? By the way, can anyone confirm that Mumm-Ra's single is actually out? Nothing in Bexhill Woolworths on Monday (no suprise), but not anywhere in Hastings either (Woolworths, Virgin or Music Zone - soon to be Fopp, incidentally) by Wednesday. I suspect Virgin may have merely ordere 3 or 4 copies again, and they've gone already. Looks like they've got another flop single on their hands then!

to clear up some facts. mumm-ras single SHOULD have been in those shops, but they have no sense. rotherbeat was ACTUALLY coined in a conversation between james arguile of mumm-ra and jon claire of youngplan. it was proceeded by bexhillbeat which didn't work, or keep the river theme. youngplan are on the majority of the mumm-ra dates, but this is no means due to them being signed. with the help of management, and putting out there own 7" single, it has become possible. how DIY!
if rotherbeat isnt sweeping the nation now, by may the 10th, it should be. x

Mumm-Ra's 'What Would Steve Do?' is stocked by Rounder Records on 2 x 7" & CD single. Just so you know.

Fair dos, I'm glad Youngplan are on their way (hopefully) to being signed! Virgin always cock up their local orders (they'd routinely get 2-or-less copies of The Candys' singles in). Yep, Mumm-Ra vinyl is indeed all over Brighton (well, Virgin, and the quality independents such as Rounder and Borderline - I'll excuse Edgeworld for not stocking it due to Colin's admirable avoidance of working with major-labels). At least 'What Would Steve do?' went Top 40. If Hastings had got it sorted, it might have charted higher maybe? But yeah, Rotherbeat-sensation for May (Mumm-Ra album-lrelease month), yes please!

Sharp-eyed vinyl-readers may have noticed that the catalogue number for Youngplan's 'Fist Fight'/'Little Things' 7" is ROTHER001... Mumm-Ra still had all of their vinyl and cd releases (bar the inital 'What Would Steve Do?' 7" and their old demo CD-Rs) for sale at The Crypt gig last night too, so plenty of opportunity to catch up still, if you want to.

If Youngplan were expecting to be in NME this week, I don't think it's happened. There would've been a chance for them to get some lines in the review of Mumm-Ra's Portsmouth gig (p42), but they're not mentioned. Mumm-Ra also score Track Of The Week (ie Single Of The Week, in Grandad's day) for 'She's Got You High' (p37) and a piece on it's video (p36), so it's not all bad.

Oh, here it is: this weeks NME has a large photo/short article on Youngplan (p22) by the A&R man (Paul Harris) at B-Unique Records, and a review of their 'Little Things' 7" (p39). Both pieces tie Youngplan in with Mumm-Ra and Hastings, though rather than using the term 'Rotherbeat', I'm afraid to say the NME's reviewer (Marc McLaren) coins the phrase 'Sexy Sussex' instead! And bungs in several references to the Battle Of Hastings, inevitably.

The current May issue of The Fly (with the Cribs on the cover) has, as you may have seen on their Myspace, a couple of Youngplan mentions; but it also has a rewarding Mumm-Ra interview too, featuring possibly the first national-press mention of Rotherbeat. I picked up a copy in Rounder in Brighton.

Tis a very cool poster! Someone needs to go round and tippex an extra 'r' into 'starring' though, if it's up anywhere...
I know, I'm just so rock and roll. (It is part of what I do for a job, though!)

Not so sharp, hot shot - what about the missing 'e' in Cloudesley? Oh, and the lower case 'j' in Japan. I don't think you are a real proof-reader .

Eh...I don't think I could spell Cloudesley the same way twice if you put a gun to my head, so I'm not about to judge there.
The lower case 'j'....I...admit it, I'm a fake! I just claim to edit things because it gets me free booze, loose women (um, men), and the adulation of my peers!
*sobs*
Are you happy now? Are you??! ;D

Deluded... If claiming to be able to proof-read got you free booze don't you think that Dean would know about it? (I've checked, he doesn't).

I'm fairly sure even Cloudesley Shovell don't spell 'Cloudsley Shovell' the same way twice! The correct spelling is, of course, Blue Cheer.

Scrolling way, way back through the East site, and here's the breaking news from Nov '06 when Youngplan started their own club night in Heroes. First band to headline? Fear Of Flying, ie White Lies. I knew that had rang a bell...

Actually, the Blog that posted this 10 5 Neuton session (Gez has replied in their Comments) is here. If you want to feel old, maybe we should point out that 10 5 Neuton's session was recorded & broadcast OVER TEN YEARS AGO! Jesus...
