Now, to fill you in on some background details, here's a digest of the free Brit Awards magazine you can pick up out & about -
"For Valentines, this will be the first year when its (sic) going to be more 'cool' to cuddle up with your partner in front of TV than going out. So stay in until 10pm - then go out and celebrate while you're on a British Music "high"...[]... While The BRIT School...is consciously not just a 'Fame School', this year it has done remarkably well even by its own high standards. Amy Winehouse, Katie Melua and Leona Lewis, as well as members of The Kooks and The Feeling all previous (sic) studied at the school." (Peter Jamieson, BPI chairman)
(Lily Allen...) attended 13 schools and was expelled by many of them, despite the kudos bestowed on her by links to her celebrity - although, rather anti-establishment - father, Keith Allen... Although friendships weren't easy to come by, Lily did befriend "the shortest boy in the year", Luke Pritchard, of The Kooks...[]...At 15, the precocious singer had left school and was hanging out in Ibiza record shops, angling for half a chance to break into the record industry. It was a life choice Lily's mother, film producer Alison Owen, wasn't impressed by...[]... (Lily): "...I had a dream and I stuck at it. I had another record deal and I lost it, I was devastated, I thought everything was over. But I got up and tried again."
(Noel Gallagher): "I wish I could remember recording (What's The Story) Morning Glory?. Twelve days and it was done, then I mixed it." He muses, "Three weeks work, maximum, and the next thing it's the biggest thing since Sargent Peppers' (sic). How did that happen?"
(Muse): "...British music is looking good at the moment. The Klaxons are my favourites, along with a band who toured with us, The Noisettes."
(The Kooks...) really got together back in 2003, while (they) studied at the Brighton Institute Of Modern Music...[]...Pritchard - former pupil at boarding school Bedales and, like (Hugh)Harris (guitar) and (Paul)Garred (drums), a The BRIT School student from the age of 16 - was one of the eldest. Rumours abound as to whether early hits were penned for his ex-girlfriend, singer Katie Melua, who also went to The BRIT School...
Of course, BRITs belle Katie Melua has been flying the flag for her famous alma mater since 2003... Katie, who met her manager Mike Batt through a BRIT School audition, is due to release her third collection in the spring... Last year saw Katie's ex-boyfriend and The BRIT School sweetheart, Luke Pritchard, hit the big time with his band The Kooks... Meanwhile, fans of The Feeling and its chirpy front man Dan Gillespie-Sells may be suprised that their favourite band met at The BRIT School, with bandmates Paul Stewart and Ciaran Jeremiah all enrolling in the same year. Finally, and bringing us right up to date, viewers watching the talent show The X Factor saw contestant - and The BRIT School graduate - Leona Lewis go through highs and lows aplenty in her quest to win on the show... These recent successes add to the list of highly respected musicians and performers - among them, Amy Winehouse, Joel Potts of Athlete, Imogen Heap, Floetry, Wayne Williams, Dane Bowers and the much-missed Lynden David Hall - who have already walked out of The BRIT School doors and into the spotlight on a worldwide stage... you can be sure there is a host of its dedicated and determined alumni are (sic) knocking hard on a&r doors or, like The Noisettes, featured below, are preparing to storm the charts.
The Noisettes' Dan Smith and Shingai Shoniwa graduated from The BRIT School in 1997... They have just finished touring Europe with stadium rockers Muse and are tipped to take on the world in 2007... (Dan): "...On the first day of my second year, I decided to act more confidently - amd I met Shingai, our singer, straight away!...Dan Gillespie-Sells and Richard Jones from The Feeling were in my year and their bandmates, Paul Stewart and Kevin Jeremiah, were in the year below. I also knew Dionne Mitchell, who was on The X Factor... I went (to the BRIT Awards) in 1996 and 1997...Shingai sneaked backstage at The BRITs and hung out with Placebo... I will make sure if we ever do make it to the BRITs one day, I'll be especially nice to the kids in the audience pit. They might be from The BRIT School - and it might be them who are on stage one day!"
(Dan Gillespie-Sells): "I met Paul (drums) and Ciaran (Keyboards) when I was in the second year, and the others later... I've been (to the BRITs) before, right in front of the stage when Michael Jackson was on and Jarvis Cocker stormed him! It was great! Afterwards, we sneaked up the fire escape and found our way into the party. No one had any idea who we were, it was like a big office party!... (After The BRIT School...) We were in covers bands and did session work...We did a few seasons (as the house band in ski bars) in Mirabel and Courcheval... We made sure the audience all left smiling. If people aren't satisfied, the bar manager won't pay you... (As sessions musicians...) The rest of the guys got more work, because I had an awful trendy mullet. But between us, we'd been on Top Of The Pops, T4, CD:UK and Friday Night With Jonathan Ross before... We finally got it together when we stopped trying to please other people."
All the (sic)s are mine, just 'cos I could. You may think there's some helpful advice mixed-in here, but it's quite clear also that it ain't what you know...
