That sounds exciting Michael - good luck with the Robot friends x
Shame about leaving Rumiko though I think - it will be a very different group without you.
We were coming over for the NYD gig anyway - should be a good one if lots of people can make it.

He was holding us back, now we can set the controls for 1974, without that little voice saying, "That's a bit trad, I don't think robots can dance to it".
Seriously though Michael's contribution and dedication over the years has been great and we wish him all the best in Silicon Heaven.
So anyone know any keyboard players who can sing harmony, have an encyclopedic knowledge of early hip hop and electro and has a slightly unhealthy kink for analogue electronics?

Michael, how about using the synth axe for your last gig?
You could use it to metaphorically cut down the Tree of Rock. A kind of cleansing ritual.

Michael - tonight Stu and I start a course in Analogue Electronic Music. I have been looking at it for a couple of years ago now could have not been able to afford it. A good friend of mine works at the art gallery it is held in and in exchange for some volunteering hours we've been given free places. It looks quite interesting, but a lot of pack into 6 weeks. www.phoenixarts.org/course_notes/AEM-course.pdfHence the VL Tone talk earlier in the week! We (I most likely) may be coming to you with questions, hope that is ok. Caroline - I get to build a Theremin so maybe we could have a Theremin-off at some time?!

I've just read the course info and would love to do this myself. I've got a few good books on electronic music and analogue synths you're both welcome to borrow and I'd suggest visiting the following website for general synth geek and rare electronic things (youtube stuff, pics etc)... matrixsynth.blogspot.com/Perhaps when you make some things that produce some tones we could all get together and produce some electronic noise together

Thanks for the link Michael. Last's night class was really good. It was very interesting. I learnt all about Expo '58 which I knew nothing about. It looked amazing. There was a phillips building that looked like it was designed like a sound wave, full of speakers - hundreds on the inside wall I think. The tutor had contacted Phillips and had obtained a copy of the projections they were showing on the inside - creepy. users.skynet.be/P-ART/PARADISE/JOURNAL/JOURNAL1/journ1.htmThe tutor played us a promotional flexi disk from EMS from the 70s - and he had made up his own slide show to go along with it - lots of pics of old synths. www.ems-synthi.demon.co.uk/adverts.htmlNext week we start to work on practical stuff, looking forward to that, but may struggle a bit with the science etc me thinks. I think you'd (and Lee?) would really love it. There is another one in May but not sure about the practicalities for you in getting over etc. Anyway, happy to share chat with you on it.

Two-thirds of the way through the Electronic Music course, and we've made tape loops, stencilled sound onto blank 16mm film stock, recorded improvised pieces through a variety of oscillators etc, and soldered together a theremin kit. Hopefully we'll have some entertainingly abstract music to take home at the end of it all... Also, last week, after the class, we stayed on and helped voice some idents for the tutor's forthcoming series on Resonance FM - Details of that to follow when we hear about it, but Michael will probably enjoy streaming it.

It's worth picking up (or photocopying) the latest SoundonSound mag as it has a loooooong feature on the history of the Radiophonic Workshop (including all the Dr Who bits!).

Hi Mikey The problem seems to be, no matter what i do, what settings etc, all the sounds are fuzzy. Not a very nice type of fuzzyness either...the only clean sounds i am getting are the tremolo sounds. Everything else is soaked with a horrible fuzzyness...does yours do that or is it supposed to be like that? I'm getting it even with the mix and volume knobs at twelve o'clock!

Hi Alfie, It's not easy to diagnose without hearing the thing but are you sure that the 'fuzzyness' isn't the lo-fi ring modulated guitar tone? Ring modulators produce dissonant harmonic tones (sorry if I'm telling you things you already know) which could be described as 'fuzzy'. My advice would be to check out the android demos on youtube. If you pedal sounds worse than the examples there, have a word with the guy who makes them (he's a reasonable bloke who offered to replace if I sent it back). Another idea might be to play 'paranoid'. The solo uses a ring modulated signal on one channel (I can't remember whether it's the left or right). Isolate the ring mod bit with your balance knob and if it sounds nasty to your ears, you might be after a different effect or a cleaner ring modulator (e.g. one with a noise gate, i.e. a moogerfooger etc). Ring mods arn't to everyones taste. You can always borrow mine when you get back to make sure yours is working okay

Hello people. It looks like I'll be playing at SOG in January so I'm on the look out for people who want to join me on stage slowly twisting filters and starting and stopping old drum machines and sequencers. I need a little help as I'm going all out analogue and don't have enough hands and feet. Dean's up for it and I'm sure Lee will lend a hand. You don't need keyboard playing skills, you just need to be able to listen and have a sense when, and when not, to play (a basic grasp of modulation, resonance and filters would be useful but no essential).

"Former Blur bassist turned farmer Alex James has announced the name of his new cheese - Blue Monday. Inspired by the 1982 New Order track, the cheese is, naturally, blue and tastes "very moist, very gooey, spicy with quite a mellow flavour with sweet notes," according to the man himself."
