Don't know how many of you are familiar with the myspace concept but Rumiko have been running a page for a little while now but I have been really slack at maintaining (no surprises there). Anyhoo the idea is that through a kind of viral networking idea you can hook up with like minded sorts and either send them photos of you in your underwear or let them listen to your music (depending on your reasons for using the service). We have around 40 "friends" now which is not a dissimilar amount to that on our mailinglist and we have had that 2 years so I reckon I better start taking a bit more interest. It might be a neat way for Dizzy Tiger to publicise their music. Only thing is it is no good unless you have a broadband connection - it is a highly frustrating experience on a dial-up. Check the Rumiko Jr myspace page: www.myspace.com/rumikojr

I had no idea you were doing a Myspace page all this time! Rupert Murdoch just bought the company, you know, enjoy it while you can ("Jeez, it doesn't make me any money!?" etc). Um, by the way, has anyone experienced problems logging in today, or is it just me? How ironic. (Oh, got it now, but there may be a problem if you alter the amount of time logged in thing down from 6 hours when you sign in. Maybe just a glitch)

It's true, I'm afraid, My Space is indeed a recent acquisition to his empire. At least you joined it with a clear conscience a couple of years back, or whenever it was. And, as far as I can see, you've not earning him any money yourselves. But, yeah, fuck it, what a swine.

Billy mentioned that Gorilla had been using it and so I set it up one afternoon in March and didn't look at it until a couple of days ago. The fact that it seems to be doing quite well without my help leads me to think that I should use it a bit more.

Given that, i'm sure ours is positively thriving! trouble is, i gott too much shit to be constantly checkin, this site, our site, emails, ebay for a copy of 'trompe le monde', its all too much for my tiny little brain! Oh yeah, if anyone fancies givin the heaters a slammin on our message board, please feel free! we only have a week until they might actually be a little bit good (probably not, but we all know how essential a killer guitar player is, right Marcus?)

Fuck it, Bonj, you'd be better off just getting the train to London and trolling round the shops down Berwick Street if it's Trompe Le Monde (my favourite Pixies LP, incidentally) you're after, sod the Ebay losers. Pixies albums sold bucketloads on vinyl, you'll find it!
There is indeed a problem with logging on to the various Proboards message boards at the moment (I've noticed it on the Passive-Aggressive and Spirit Of Grvaity ones too), but only if you alter the box showing how long you wish to remain logged in: leave it at 6 hours and you seem to be able to get in ok, just log out afterwards if you're using a public computer.
Thanks for leaving the bag of Minstrels last night, they were tasty.

1. The logging-in problem fixed itself weeks ago. 2. I think I just made a MySpace profile for myself, but have been drinking the leftover beer from ATP, so am not sure what I've achieved. Murdoch: still a dick, but if it helps Googling etc, then yay. Will try and get the proper references and links on it when I get a better idea of what's involved. Otherwise, all you could find it out is me own musical/emotional preferences as usual, and there's been enough of that this year. 3. Apart from Rumiko, can anyone else remember their MySpace urls?

Well found, Marcus, did you do a search? I wasn't sure I'd got it working at the time. I've gone back in and cropped the photos on there slightly (as the only photos I've got of myself on the computer are two I saved from the Placard Festival website, and one that Emma took - which all needed editing), and changed some of the text. The lists of bands/books/films/tv I like is totally incomplete, as I couldn't be bothered to think too hard about it. I think people are gonna be bothered more by me professing a liking for OMD than anything in the personal column! So yeah, it's probably a waste of time, but if it brings browsers over to any of our music sites, or gets me a new partner I'm leaving it up there, at www.myspace.com/stuarthuggett . Please add "Rupert Murdoch is an arsehole" -type postings, and we'll see if any of them fuckers are paying attention!

Gotta admit, the attraction of MySpace has dimmed within seven days, as it's really tediously slow-moving, and you just end-up getting loads of chain-letter emo crap from well-meaning young people with way too much online time on their hands! Since putting myself up whilst drunk the other day, all I've mainly done is gradually removed information about myself. It's handy in that you can send out a bulletin to all your 'friends' and know that, for example, The Pastels are gonna get a copy, but I'd rather just point anyone who finds me on MySpace back to these boards. But yeah, too easy for branches of the Murdoch empire to cherry-pick bands with loads of friends/downloads etc for their labels, with all the photo/biog stuff already up there, and a ready-made fanbase too. This is the flipside of the Arctic Monkeys phenomenon: any crappy label can now offer any band a deal, and can in fact identify the more naiive artists from their blogs etc and offer them worse deals. I don't think I've made a single friend up there who I don't already know; I've just been adding the odd band I quite like. Which is a bit too close to stamp-collecting really.

the strength of myspace before was the way it gave rise to sefl supporting scenes. friend groups of bands would organise impromptu events and other bands would turn up and support. video shoots, dj nights, one off gigs at parties, etc. it was efficient, kind of ruthlessly so - like speaking to like. but now it really is just a huge focus group of exploitable subcultures. most sinister.

What if one of us IS a spy for the greedy Aussie guy? Brrr.
Meanwhile, the single/relationship part of my MySpace profile continues to fluctuate from one place to the next, as I fail to keep track on whether I'm supposed to have a partner or not.
I fear the Ghost Of Christmas Past is approaching, and he looks an awful lot like Les Gray.

Reasons these boards are better than Myspace:
- They're not forever undergoing maintenance. - No chain messages from bored emo kids. - Better quality writing!
I'm bored, can you tell?

Ok, I've finally got round to following up Marcus' suggestion and have transferred a few songs (one each by Regular John, Rumiko Jr, The Crayons and The Flesh Happening, so far) onto my Myspace page. At least, I think I have: not having broadband it's difficult to tell sometimes (it may in fact have been quicker for me to sit there and re-record each song myself and put it online, the bloody time this computer takes...)
If anyone has other acts they've spotted on Myspace who'd be relevant and suitable for me to add, or if any of the aforementioned groups would prefer me to use a different track, then just mention it here, or on Myspace if you're on there.
I've also added my Myspace link to the very bottom of the Contacting Our Friends page on the main Dizzy Tiger site: tucked away down there 'cos it still feels a bit like sponsorship to me.
And yes, I think the lengthy profile I've written on the Myspace page makes me sound pathologically something-or-other, but it's done now, so blah.
Thanks also to Regular John for adding a particularly cadaverous photo of me to their Myspace pictures. ("I said to Napoleon: 'Boney', I said...")
Brrr!

Oh, looks like you can only have one song at a time on a non-music profile (or does anyone know better?) So at the moment it's The Flesh Happening, and I'll just change the songs round every so often. Bother. Unless I change my profile-style: any ideas?

These daft bloody chain-questionairres on Myspace (Who's your best friend? What's their favourite treat? Have you kissed them? Who rocks their world? etc) - Who starts them, eh? Surely this is where the market-research is happening. I reckon we should start some totally libellious and depraved ones, and keep sending them to "Tom". He's no friend of mine!

According to the Guardian website today - The Sun (as in newspaper) are tying their website to Myspace.
Not sure what this means really.
Annoyingly I cannot access it (Myspace) from work as it is banned by the Council, so I've no idea what the site looks like / has on it.

Myspace is actually a really dull phenomenon; the only thing it really seems to be good for is getting people to try their hand at designing their own webpages on it, so I suppose that's kind-of an education. But otherwise, it crashes all the time, you get loads of unwanted downloads that throw you offline, and there's dozens of repeated, pointless promotional mail-outs from various bands or individuals that you'd never even want to read, let alone respond to. And the search features don't work. It's the Friday Ad of the internet. Why is it banned by the council: is it 'cos it causes system-problems, or is it 'cos it would have no uses that could be tied to the functions of the council? It is an enormous distraction for people with too much time on their hands. The Sun will have linked their websites to it 'cos the huge numbers of people using Myspace means a large audience to advertise to and puch other services to, and as Petra has noted, there's a lot of consumer data-gathering that can be made about the users' lifestyle choices. Myspace is part of News International, as are The Sun. Also, the music that bands etc put up there for potential fans to hear for free is a feature that is only really effective on broadband. It wouldn't suprise me if, somewhere in the small-print, News International have acquired certain rights to the music that's online. Danger!

There are many sites banned by the Council IT dept - like ebay, yahoo and hotmail mail etc, BUST mag! I'm sure it is only a matter of time before this site is - then what will Petra and I do with our days? When I was at uni in 95 there was a big boom in people using Yahoo's geocities sites - that seems to have died down now - perhaps it is a similar thing? x

Funnily enough I've managed to get some interest off my myspace site and it looks like tuesdays Sun will have a feature on me and my 'devil may care' attitude. Obviously I have to get me tits out but thats a minor price to pay for this snapshot of glitterati fame. 'Who are the glitterati?.... They're the people that glitter!' On a more true note I've stuck a brand new track on there that I'll be 'playing' tomorrow night. Check it out now for a sneak prev of the set (for those that can, or can be arsed)! www.myspace.com/rashamon (if u hadn't guessed) mmmmm.....hope the weeks of no social life to do these tracks pays off...

(just chilling after a stressed weekend with some Guiness at last)
I have been asked by quite a few people this week if i'm on myspace. I'm not. I don't like the idea of picking a bunch of myspace"friends". It's so fake! Reading this thread has resolved me never to go down this myspace path . To hell with the consequences, myspace is unlikely to bring me that which I desire.

Oh chris you miserable boy!...JOIN US. As I said to stu on sunday I'll be closing the Passive-Aggressive site very soon due to having far too much to bloody do Rashamon/Day Job wise...Its a shame but I just don't think I can offer it as a viable mini label when the only act I have to put stuff out by is me because I wouldn't have time/effort/money to sort it out for anyone else. So until www.rashamon.co.uk sees the light of day myspace is all I've got. And none of the friends I've got there are fake. Except the one who joined when I first started to welcome me to myspace. But I haven't really got to know him. Everybody else I asked in person before they went on there. Except Psapp. But I would really, genuinely, like to be their friend. Lifes a sweet piece of shit as it is.

Well I certainly agree with your last statement (the pessimist is never disappointed)
ok, not everybody's list of friends is fake, and that remark was made about myspace in general with not any particular ones in mind; and fair enough it serves a purpose if you don't have another website (sorry to hear about closing the Passive-Aggressive site). But I'm still not convinced.
I met Psapp at one of Kev's gigs at the Engine Room, he was a nice chap, I think he was playing in a band but I can't recall their name. see you soon hopefully...
