So, My Bloody Valentine are back together, hey-ho...
Band reformations, then:
Your favourite examples? And your least favourite?

Just been reading first chapters of the MBV book Marcus & Lisa got me for Christmas (thanks!) - which is a great little book - but it doesn't make me happy that they've reformed after all this time, especially post-'Lost In Translation' and all those duff production & remix jobs Shields has undertaken for mediocre bands since (Hurricane #1, Placebo, etc). But... it could yet be worthwhile: his stuff with the 'Scream & Mascis was often great.
Other favourite reformations I've seen include Wire, Dinosaur Jr and TG. Lesser ones (though still with enjoyable gigs): New Order, OMD.

Um... I can't wait to see them live again. The good things about old shoe-gazers is that it's not like they'll be jumping about the stage any less

We shouldn't be down on Shields for trying to earn a crust, the guy's got to eat! I liked his work on Lost In Translation, it seemed really right for the film. I for one will be standing with my stopwatch to see how long the nine minute chord lasts for (probably around nine minutes).

Shields in the 33rpm (technically 33-and-a-third, but I can't find a fractions key on this keyboard) book, talking about 'Lost In Translation' (p110) :
"They gave me the opportunity to replace some of the music they had in the rough cuts. But it had to be a similar style of what was already there, which was an imitation of My Bloody Valentine. So it was a little weird trying to imitate something that was trying to imitate something I'd done before."
If that was all the comissioning I was getting, I'd reform my old band too!

There's several clips of some of Toyskin rehearsing for this one-off comeback on YouTube.
The fan-made Teenbeats video is still up there too: it may be violating Tom's copyright (as well as Quadrophenia's and BBC/ITN News'), but they're getting their gigs plugged in the Comments.

*cough* Mumm-Ra *cough*
According to MSN rumour. If true, you could probably guess where and when. But I may be wrong.

I was right - they're out tonight - it was confirmed on MySpace this afternoon. If you're staying home in the warm, maybe keep an eye on the old MSN for the results - although it seems to be going offline soon (along with all MSN groups in their current forms). I love a happy ending.

A Mancunian friend of mine, who actually knew them back in the day, has just claimed that The Stone Roses are reforming...

The story's in The Mirror today, but Naureen seems pretty convinced...

The real question is does anyone really care if they reform again?

I don't have high hopes for it being any good! Naureen heard it on XFM, incidentally, probably just reporting The Mirror's story. She's looking forward to it, if true, at any rate, I think.

ug i hate it when bands reform - the worst thing is punk bands sex pistol never had any cred anyway but i was really sad to see even CRASS had done a gig ! GBH, Discharge... probably ton's of them? yeah, at least shoegazers will still be doing the same act but Nah you missed it - move on. can't think of any good examples at all.

UK Subs are at The Crypt next month, you know... Mind you, I don't think they ever split up in the first place.

There didn't seem to be a mail-out for the last-but-one ATP/Breeders announcement, but there's a very unlikely reformed band on the bill...

Well-placed sources are indicating a Toploader comeback (well, NeilM reckoned so down the pub last week, if that counts!) Didn't they play at Bexhill College once? Or was that Snug? Maybe no-one ever played Bexhill College at all, I can't remember...

Joe Washbourn (by all accounts, a nice chap) has now confirmed this on MySpace - live dates and album to follow. Maybe not what you or I have been waiting for, but Dancing In The Moonlight's still regularly on commercial radio and in the background of tv programmes, so they may stand to make some money by touring again (which the Dancing... radio-play won't be bringing in for them, I'd imagine). Been some interesting, generally positive reactions from the Eastbourne end so far anyway.

Here's the Toploader story then. I'm sitting in on the forthcoming East interview next week, which should be interesting.

Joe Washbourn & Dan Hipgrave: both nice guys, although slightly affected by their experiences in different ways. You can read all about it in Dave Standen's mag feature later in the month, but we might also put the full interview transcript up on the East site too, which means Nick doesn't have to be left out!
