Some of you with memories pre-dating Dizzy Tiger may recall a plan I once had, whilst living in Pevensey Road with Marcus & Seb (I think), of getting a bunch of people together on the night the clocks go back, and recording an hour's worth of extrememly quiet music during the 'extra' hour of that night. Or maybe you don't! Anyway, this project has now been potentially resuscitated for a nightime event at the Phoenix Arts Centre in Brighton at the end of October (when the clocks go back, we think) - more details to follow, possibly. So if anyone still has an interest in taking part in such a musical activity with me, please let me know! I'll need a fair few people to make it worth doing.

I think 25th October is the date: this is part of a proper arts event too, mmm... highbrow!

I checked the facebook group, couldn't find anything about this specific event. What kind of improvisation are you looking for Stu? Who'll be involved, and what will be the themes you're wanting us to improvise on?

There's nothing specific about this improvisation on the Facebook group yet, because we haven't put forward a finalised proposal - it's still in the informal conversations stage! I was just thinking of getting people to spend that hour using their instruments to try and make as little noise as possible (whilst still actually playing them, of course) in a sort of 'nocturnal sounds' way (rustling, scratching, squeaking) - although some background ebb & flow (whether through bowed instruments or analogue electronics) would be useful. Whichever of us lot want to do it may yet find ourselves playing in conjunction with other musicians already confirmed as participating in the event as a whole, but I'm hoping for a mix of skilled and amateur players for this hour.
Obviously it's all a bit unformed at the moment: the possibility of the improvisation has only come up because Sara was chatting to us about the event and we were suggesting people and ideas for it. I mentioned it at an early stage on this board partly to help shape the idea anyway, so long as people were up for it.

Well, I'm up for bringing the cello and Joe fancies a bit of subsonic rumble if either of those would suit...

You'd both be very welcome! I should be a lot more focussed on sorting this out once I'm back from holiday.
Incidentally, there are also possible opportunities for performing left-field musics at Phoenix on the weekend of Sat 11th/Sun 12th Oct as part of their Open Studio - I'm supposed to sound-out Spirit Of Gravity about this. Again: early days yet, hopefully more info to follow.

I've just cancelled the slot at this event, 'cos there's no way I'm gonna get it organised. Sorry all.

Still looks like a good event - Spirit of gravity at Phoenix should be good and the under water music at prince regents pool.

Kim Wan's involved in this Nuit Blanche stuff too: he's at the Phoenix Gallery too, as part of the Beatabet collective.

If you go to the Videos on the Spirit Of Gravity's MySpace page, you can now see quite a few videos of other performances from their room at the White Night event, including Henry Collins' hoover. www.myspace.com/thespiritofgravity

I'm helping Rita out this evening at the private view of her Disembodied Sound And Light Orchestra performance, at the Chelsea College Of Art & Design.
Looks like it's along similar lines to some of the White Night stuff, but we'll see. More info once I get home again!
The performances continue publicly on Fri, Sat & Mon afternoons (4pm-ish) if anyone's in London and wants to take a look.

The first 45 secs is of Rita's work - I'm sitting on the floor making sounds from an upturned cymbal with a contact mic attached. Other volunteers are doing similar things with tanks of wet clay, sheets of paper, glass tubes full of polystyrene and water, bundles of tin foil strips, and more. Um, the soundtrack you can hear obviously isn't the soundtrack we were creating (which Rita was altering the output of at a mixing desk).
