I'm gonna try and put together a useful reference list of books (non-fiction, fiction, photos etc) on Hastings and the surrounding area. Feel free to add your suggestions to the thread, and I'll incorporate them in this top post, as & when I'm able.
Brand, Jo - It's Different For Girls (2005, paperback). Fiction.
Cox, Tom - Educating Peter (Bantam Press, 2003, paperback). Memoir. The chapter 'Mr Ed' apparently recounts a trip to Hastings, but (unless Tom Cox is a very bad writer indeed) I'd almost certainly guarantee he's covering-up for a different location.
Craic, Seamus - Keane (Artnik Books, 2006, paperback). Biography. Illustrated.
Dellar, Robert - Homicide (in 'Suspect Device' ed. Stewart Home, Serpent's Tail, 1998, paperback). Anthology. Hastings, conceptually, provides the pay-off in this psychotic short story, set in Brighton and Seaford.
Eldridge, Charles - The Second Battle Of Hastings (2004, paperback). Fiction/History(?)
Evans, Richard - The Zookeeper (Egg Box Publishing, 2002, paperback). Poetry. Photos by Camilla Stapleton-Hibbert.
Graham, Ranald - Last Train (in 'London: City Of Disappearances' ed. Iain Sinclair, Hamish Hamilton, 2006, hardback; Penguin Books, paperback). Anthology.
Hanna, Nick & Cross, Tim (eds.) - Hastings Today (Seachange Publishing, 2001, paperback). Photography. Contributors: Andrew Catlin, John Cole, Tim Cross, Kathe Deutsch, Steven Differ, George Greaves, Peter Greenhalf and Janet Pollard, Nick Hanna, Roland Jarvis, Peter Johns, John Kenward, Bob Mazzer, John Miles, Denise O'Neil, Chris Parker, Steve Pyke, Camilla Stapleton-Hibbert, Sussex Wildlife Trust, Nick Wates, Anna White.
Hegley, John - 'Sheds' (in collection Can I Come Down Now Dad? Methuen, 1991/Mandarin, 1992, paperback). Poem.
Horowitz, Anthony - Foyle's War (various titles). Fiction.
Marshall, Rebecca E - Ways To Disappear (Etruscan Books, 2009, paperback). Poetry. One of the pieces, 'Mortar', also appears on an accompanying DVD as an abstract, audio-visual "Film Poem", partially shot in the Old Town.
Milligan, Spike - The Goon Show Scripts (The Woburn Press 1972; Sphere Books, 1973, paperback). Radio scripts. Includes 'The Dreaded Batter Pudding Hurler (of Bexhill-on-Sea)', 'The Hastings Flyer', and others. Illustrated.
Sharpe, Graham - The Man Who Was Screaming Lord Sutch (Aurum Press, 2005, hardback). Biography. Chapter 14 'Battle Of Hastings' recounts Sutch's Hastings period during the 90s.
Sinclair, Iain - Dining On Stones (Hamish Hamilton, 2004, hardback; Penguin Books, 2005, paperback). Fiction.
Sinclair, Iain - Buried At Sea (Worple Press, 2006, paperback). Poetry, with prose & photographs. (nb: Worple Press also published The Verbals, 2003, paperback - a collection of interviews with Sinclair by Kevin Jackson, inc. some Hastings discussion. Most of Sinclair's post-2000 books contain some Hastings references.)
Spleen, O./Speer, Oliver - Depravikazi (Running Water Publications, 2003, paperback). Fiction/autobiography. Introduction by Salena Saliva Godden. Cover photos by Camilla Stapleton-Hibbert & Hannah Neech.
Tookey, Oliver - Hastings Beautiful Town (Breedon Books, 2009, hardback). Photography.
Tressell, Robert - The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists (various editions). Fiction.
anonymous - Foyle's Hastings (Hastings Borough Council, 2006, paperback). Location guide. Illustrated.

Actually there was a guy who was writing a biog of Martyn who was in the Hastings Observer quite some time back asking for people with stories to get in touch - I don't know if this has come out yet, and I don't know if I've still got the clipping with the writer's name. I'd imagine that there could well be a few Martyn biogs published later in the year to commemorate/cash-in on his life: his death made a larger splash than was expected, as far as public response goes. Maximise the Nick Drake connections and any publisher could be quids in. But you're right, it'd make a good piece of fiction - not for me to attempt though.

Etruscan sent a second parcel of books to me today, after their first lot got mis-directed to Hastings, so I've added Rebecca's one in to the list above. Also, I only just realised when I was writing it up for the East Soapbox that the Keira Knightley film being shot in Bexhill recently is an adaptation of the Kazuo Ishiguro novel Never Let Me Go (Faber & Faber, 2005), set, presumably co-incidentally, in a school called "Hailsham House".
