Soon as possible for your track please Alfie. Got a Regular John track from the Basement studio sessions now, so otherwise just waiting on Rumiko's decision. Nearly there, Chris!

hi stuart, started recording the track, hey are you gonna have the finished cd mastered at the end? I'm asking because I am only gonna master the track lightly, in case you do...dont want it to sound over-compressed because it would lose some "life"...let me know

Sorry Alfie, Marcus is right: every track appears in the raw form it's supplied, I don't get involved in anything as technical as mastering. Just have to cross-fingers that the cd doesn't skip etc. Lo-fidelity all the way!

Well, at the risk of sounding like a complete egomaniac, my remix was really quiet on the Rashamon single, it's not really something that the contributor can control, I mean don't get me wrong, I'd rather have lofi releases over rigorous state of the art mastering. And I'm happy & greteful to be on any DT release cause the other music is always ace, but I'm just giving my vote for minor aesthetic volume adjustments where nessecary.

well i only mention an overall mastering otherwise when the next track comes up everyone will think someone has turned the stereo up! However im gonna do the track and master it slightly...just did some piano on it...was allright, but i put it through a ring modulator, in true fucked up style...sometimes i think i am a genious, really. Most of the times, i think i'm a cunt, especially the next day when i listen to it...

That's fine, Alfie. Seems to be another flurry of tracks appearing for this comp (possibly got another three on board over the weekend), so as soon as I get the time and sort some computer access out I'll try and get it ready. As I think I've already said, I'll probably have a tape version run-off first though.

Just let me know when it's done. But please don't go down Jonathan Martin's route of thinking "Just one more overdub..." for the rest of the year!

Nah, i like to keep it organic! It's just that after mixing the violin parts, i realized there were more bum notes than expected so i had to take a lot of it out, so it's a bit empty...also it really needs the cello, it's a fact. A string section needs the bottom end! Anyhow, i will be as quick as i can ;-)

Cheers, Alfie: I had a count this morning, and am certain that once your, Rufus' and Rumiko's tracks are in place there'll be enough to put the comp out. Anything forthcoming from you, Petra? Otherwise, provisional tracklisting probably to follow next week.

well, it's a girl singer and a guitarist doing an album, but they have been recording with drummer, bassist, piano player and me and they love it so we are gonna do something and see how it goes...fucking great singer, great musicians, great songs!

Looks like there's an outside chance we'll end up with more tracks than are needed for one compilation, at this rate; so there could be a swift follow-up with another comp once I've got this Anti one out the way... We're getting supplied with another computer courtesy of Anna soon, which has a built-in cd-burner, so hopefully I won't break that one, and things can get going again soon. Smart.

why dont we do a fund rising gig in smugglers to raise money for the mastering? it really should be done otherwise every track will be quieter or much louder than the one before...i'm sure if we master at Gary's we'll get away with 50 quid or so...worth doing!

Jeffrey/Disastronaut has also offered assistance with burning cds, so I might be able to involve him in helping with mastering too, if people really prefer me to go down that route.

well, it's the way to go...imagine the cd being played in Smugglers and Ewan having to turn the volume up or down at the beginning of each track....mastering can be done very cheap...can't the guys do it in the basement?

|
Post by marcusjr on Jun 8, 2006 18:11:32 GMT 1
Well we wouldn't want Ewan distracted from the bar by volume changes. We don't really have the ears for the EQ side of mastering, we can sort volumes out and compress the tracks but the clever stuff is best left to a professional. Ramon is the man when it comes to sorting out lo-fi recordings as anyone who heard the before and after versions of Mama Josie and the Alleycats pizza album will attest.

I only know Gary by reputation (Sundial, not personal rep.), but could approach him via Christa, I expect, when it's time.
