venues like king tut's wah wah hut in glasgow have had everyone from richmond fontaine to willard grant cospiracy etc etc, not just 18yr old indie bands...i know what you mean though, places like pressure point are useless unless you are that kind of band. So you finally got a manager! About fucking time! I'm sure he can get you more gigs in a week that we ever got in years!

No photos, but Mumm-Ra make it into the NME today, with a positive live review and gossip-mention for the Camden Crawl. It's a start!

Thanks to Reuben for picking me up a copy of the single (What Would Steve Do?/Song E) - the second side's got more personality (and guitars) than the first, which seems tailored for radio-play, which has worked by now, of course. We know they're on a big label really, but the single is a pretty white-label clear vinyl 7" in a clear PVC sleeve, with an individually-designed postcard (mine's 'Gardens Of Sussex') with the track info etc, and the run-out groove catalogue number 'BEXHILL01' ! Have a word with Reu, or collar the group (usually to be found in the Bexhill Farm Kitchen of a lunchtime) for one: think it's a tour-single otherwise.
Meanwhile, in other local (jazz) news, the new issue of The Wire (#268, Sonic Youth cover) comes with a free cd in their Wire Tapper series (#15) with a Trevor Watts track. And Highpoint Lowlife's Izu are on there too.

More Mumm-Ra in today's NME: a song from a forthcoming EP on Columbia in the NME office playlist (p.7), and a live review from Cambridge (p.24) with a photo of Noo. All positive.

They're also briefly referenced in a news story about the Reading Festival (yes, I am being deliberately anachronistic) too...

Bit of a late one this, but this month's issue of The Fly (cover story: "Hope Of The States deliver album of the year" - some mistake, surely) has a half-page Mumm-Ra live review from the Dublin Castle, opposite a full page photo of Noo on stage. He's gurning a bit! I don't see The Fly very often at the moment, but Reuben said they mentioned the Ra in their ones-to-watch column at the start of the year, so it could be interesting keeping an eye on the mag over the next few months.

There's a review of the forthcoming ep Black Hurts Day And The Night Rolls On, on p95 of the new issue of Uncut (100 Greatest Debut Albums cover).
As soon as anyone we know (or anyone interesting) starts getting interviews etc, I'll probably start a new thread to highlight bits of press: for odds & ends of reviews, I'll continue to flag them up in threads appropriate to the individual bands.

Our Bexhill correspondent has just informed me that the Ra (or should that be the ra?) beat Radio One's Colin Murray at ping-pong at the weekend, which will be featured on today's show, from 1pm.
Michael managed to listen to Radio One for around 5 minutes before conceding middle age and switching back to Radio 4- let's see if anyone else does any better! ;D
Edited to add: Well, I managed about 3 minutes. Do Colin and Edith actually like each other? Their slightly awkward small talk suggests not...

To be fair Edith cannot do anything without coming across as awkward, or is that simple?
I listen to radio 1 a lot now. Early mid life crisis and all that. I actually enjoy some bits. I do listen to Chris Moyles (yes, I know what a c*nt he is) and I do not enjoy that, but cannot face radio2 or 4 first thing. I am a new convert to Scott Mills - having listened to him for years and hating him - have recely discovered I love him and enjoy listening to his show in the PM. Am lucky this week as Scott is covering for Moyles - yey!
Anyway, Manged to miss Mumm-Ra - presumably a short item?

Can't be entirely certain anything actually happened on there today. I heard the story at lunchtime (via Annie Mac, covering for Jo Whiley, who was at a school sports day!): Colin Murray was apparently so incensed at losing that he vowed never to play MummRa on the afternoon show. Annie Mac was just trailing the Colin & Edith show with the tale, to give the impression that the two djs would be going-over the story resentfully again later (I think Gary Lightbody also subsequently bested them). So Radio 1 listeners may have had their only exposure to the incident during the T In The Park coverage over the weekend. I'm sure MummRaRule or their Myspace will reveal all...

2nd ra video on their myspace page. Blimey looks like they've got a budget on this one. Much mugging from Noo. The song is rather fun, starting with a lot of vogueish noise moving through some interesting shifts of rhythm and pace to finally a brass section with Noo and Ollie trading the line "I can't believe your cowardice". It's not at all bad.

Once again, this week's NME (nb: Lily Allen's on the cover, winking, and saying something 'controversial' - I know we all look a bit like our parents, but on this occasion she Really looks like her dad...it's a bit peculiar): p75. Mumm-Ra photo in the Gig Guide (same photo as the recent Cambridge gig). p44. Mumm-Ra's Song B video new-entry at number 10 in the NME Chart Show (on MTV2, so no-one ever watches it) Top 10. So that's the bottom of the chart... typically wacky sub-editors gag about the band's name though. But best of all... p20. Franz Ferdinand's written introduction to NME's T In The Park reviews: "This weekend we're looking forward to...watching some of our favourite bands, such as the 1990s, Primal Scream, RHCP, Wolfmother and Mumm-Ra." Ahem, Wolfmother?! For fuck's sake! There's also something about a band called The Crayons on p18, but it's only by following this link that we'll find out if it's the same one we know and love (the photo's too blurry): www.nme.com/newmusic/the-crayons

[nb: That is The Crayons, with an mp3 of their popular song You Can't Get Awwy From Me. The rest of you might fancy posting stuff about yourselves over at www.nme.com if you feel 'new' still...] Anyway, www.mumm-ra.com is now up & running as a full-site: several more songs & videos to download, a new forum, great design, much Bexhill-ness... Go see!

'The Album Chart Show', Channel 4, 12.50am-1.20am. Also featuring Guillemots, Lily Allen and Razorlight: oh no!
Quick Mumm-Ra quiz: Q. Have Mumm-Ra released an album? A. No. Which begs the question...

The above programme is repeated tonight, Channel 4, 12:30am-1.05am. If you don't want to stay up too late, the running order is: Lily Allen - interview & 1 song. Mumm-Ra - 1 song (Song B). [adverts] Guillemots - 1 song. Razorlight - 2 songs. Hadn't seen it before 'til last night: the show's reminiscent of ITV's The Roxy (if you remember that), with live vocals over mimed performances. Mumm-Ra are lots of proggy fun. Lily Allen looks like the spoilt, corporate fish-out-of-water that she is. Guillemots are horrendously overblown. Razorlight are Razorlight. The presenter's a dick.

This week's NME/Mumm-Ra moment: Single review, p34. Generally favourable; heavy Gorkys influence noted (along with The Rapture, Cardiacs and The House Of Love). Worth a glance, then.

'Wasn't Mumm-Ra the evil Mummy enemy of the Thundercats? So whats he doing releasing an EP of polished chirpy indie rock that will appeal to fans of The Mystery Jets? Surely this can't be him, he sounded so evil. This is quite commercial sounding but I reckons but the songs aren't quite catchy enough to secure them a spot on a Satuday Morning kids show like CDUK. The tracks range from dense guitar pieces to quieter, stripped down more reflecteive stuff. Digi-pak CD and 10" to follow...'
So says Norman Records......

By the way, has anyone bought this ep yet? Virgin in Hastings have got it on cd, but I'm gonna try Brighton tomorrow for the 10" poster-bag instead. Dunno what the potential chart position could be (or even if it's eligable for the charts under whatever the BPI's current rules are), but Hastings' Woolworths weren't stocking it (unless, like many other releases, they were out of stock). Obviously if I can find it tomorrow (and, crucially, have got enough money) then by all means text me to see if I can pick up copies for anyone else. I won't know until I'm down town! Reuben reckoned Mumm-Ra might also be lined-up for an eventual gig in town (which would be the first for ages) in Brass Monkey, sometime later in the year. Gotta be a goer.

There's a little bit on the making of the Song B video on p37 of today's NME. Meanwhile, on p68, Stuart Mackenzie gets a Club Of The Week feature for his Perfumed Garden night at Heroes on Thursdays (this week's guest djs - The Rakes). Includes a Top 10 for the club (which includes Song B again), and a photo of, apparently, four of it's punters - but who are they? Any ideas, Reuben?

No Top40 chart-placing for the new Mumm-Ra ep; but right at the moment you broadbanders can use www.bbc.co.uk to access two live sessions, with interviews, from this last week. Radio 2: Dermot O'Leary: Sat 29th July. (About 1'10" in: live versions of There She Is, and a cover of In Between Days). Radio 6: Gideon Coe: Wed 26th July. (About 1'39" in: live versions of Starlight and Light Up This Room). I don't think their appearance on XFM last week has been archived online, unless you can find something I missed at www.xfm.co.uk [Oh yeah, I was gonna add that the ep also got good reviews in Artrocker, issue 41, p15; and The Fly, July issue, p53 - Single Of The Month in fact.]

It's only been a fortnight, but they're back in the NME again: a few favourable lines in the Fuji Rock Festival review, p39. While they remain in Mumm-Ra's Myspace Top 8, can we get Rumiko a press-officer too now please?
