Righto, this week in NME, Mumm-Ra get the same old photo and a brief description in the '15 New Bands You Have To See This Weekend' (oh, they're so prescriptive!), on p33. [If you want to keep abreast of the competition, the other 14 bands are: Fields, You Say Party! We Say Die!, Good Shoes, Metric, Little Man Tate, The Sunshine Underground, Tilly & The Wall, Goodbooks, Switches, Send More Paramedics, The On Offs, The Pigeon Detectives, Tapes 'n' Tapes and The Rumble Strips; a handful of whom have actually been mentioned on our various boards, sites and blogs, if you'd been paying very close attention!] Oh, and Mumm-Ra do get one of those little small-ads for their forthcoming tour-dates (p58), which also tells us that Out Of The Question is released as their next single on 23rd October.
Ok, there's not actually much news there really, so here's a joke form the NME letters page that I like (from a certain Jono of Nantwich):
- How many emo kids does it take to change a lightbulb? - Sorry, an unexpected error has occurred, it has been forwarded to MySpace's technical group.

Mumm-Ra's Reading Festival review is on p39 of this week's NME. Positive. Resemblence to early-Blur noted, for wrong reasons.

There is indeed a cover-mount cd with this week's NME, featuring Mumm-Ra's really rather charming These Things Move In Threes. According to the cd sleeve, they're being produced by Youth. According to the NME blurb, they're also from Hastings now.
(Also on the cd, if it helps sway you either way: The Fratellis, Noisettes, Howling Bells, The Rumble Strips, Goodbooks, Scissors For Lefty, Field Music, The Sunshine Underground, Gogol Bordello, Duels, Spank Rock, The Morning After Girls, Fields, and Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly. Not all these bands are actually any good at all)

I was suprised to find out I quite like Gogol Bordello too! And Spank Rock - yes!
That's currently a Mumm-Ra exclusive track, by the way.

With their new single out in a fortnight, there's a double-page Mark Beaumont feature on Mumm-ra in today's NME (pp14-15), along with a couple of other mentions (What's on the NME stereo p7; Gig Guide p64). They got their name on the cover too. Mucho Bexhill-area references to boot.

Yes, it's another positive Mumm-ra single review from the NME, p39. Writer expresses fear that it may be too tuneful for the kids nowadays, but then that doesn't seem to be a problem for My Chemical Romance (if Queen had been four Brian Mays...)
It's possible no-one else knows what I'm talking about.

Picked up 'Out Of The Question' on cd in Virgin today for £1.99. Sadly it's not available in Bexhill Woolworths. They do namecheck the town in the B-side 'Clocks Tick Louder At The Dead Of Night' though: could this be a first for Sony/Columbia?

According to www.mumm-ra.com Mumm-Ra are indeed going out on the NME's New Year package-tour, along with The Automatic, The Horrors and The View. However, the nearest date to Hastings is the final one, 23rd February, at Brixton Academy. Not even Brighton! Boo.

So now Mumm-ra are on the NME tour, they're pretty-much gonna be mentioned in the magazine every week, I expect. The dates were announced in there last week; and this week you even get a caricature (probably meant to be of Noo) as part of the always-unfunny NME cartoon-strip Fanboy. It's not Great Pop Things or Dr Crawshaft, I'm afraid. (Prize of a couple of duplicated back-issues of Uncut and Mojo for anyone who correctly identifies which minor music & comedy celebrities were respectively responsible for those two strips though...)

In the current issue, the NME's top 10 tips for 2007 are The View, The Twang, Blood Red Shoes, Mumm-ra, The Pigeon Detectives, Enter Shikari, Cold War Kids, Tokyo Police Club, Paramore, and The Enemy - and yeah, in most cases, me neither, but that's the point. There's a fairly insubstantial half-page photo and interview with the 'Ra, but obviously they're gonna be in the press throughout the year ahead, so I'll only add prompts here if there's ever any interesting points made by the band or feature-writers (not the case this week...)

'What Would Steve Do?' has broken into the Top 40 at, er, Number 40. Hit! The B-side is 'Cute As', a superior re-recording of the song from the old 'Mumm-Ra The Ever-Living' CD-R we all had. The cd-single adds a short song called 'Without You', which one could reasonably say is a homage to Rumiko's 'Broken Down, Whiskey Sound'... I'll give everyone a listen later in the week: make your own judgement!

Stop it Marcus, you're only jealous! They well deserve it, they worked their socks off over the years, and they were always committed to one another, never mind the parents, girlfriends etc....they wanted to do music, and they succeded because they put music first, and not people. And as far as the thieving is concerned...well, Rumiko nicked it from Gram Parsons etc, Gram Parsons nicked it from Hank Williams, Hank Williams nicked it from somewhere else...who gives a fuck!

A touch over-sensitive today Alf? Fall out of bed the wrong side this morning? Had some kind of terrible irony bypass?
Irrespective of your misunderstanding of the tone of my last comment, the suggestion that Mumm-Ra are the sort of people that place music (vibrating air) before people (real actual human beings) is pretty insulting. Better hope they aren't easily offended, you might wake up with a sitar in your bed.

What i meant was, between staying home listening to their girlfriends jealousy bullshit or going to rehearsal, they went to rehearsal. Sorry, didn't mean to be offensive. And yes, was having a shit day and still are today...feel very lonely and confused! Not playing, not going out, feel like i've got no friends apart from my cat, and have had horrible toothache which i can't afford to sort out. Phheew that's it off my chest!

Am sorely tempted to leap grumpily to the defence of band widows everywhere, but I'm not sure how useful that would be, so I won't. What I will say, is that I think the 'jealousy bullshit', as you put it, arises from the fact that far from being neglected, the band is prioritised ahead of the relationship so much of the time. As an illustration (and not trying to make him feel bad, because he made up for it!), I once had Michael cancel a long-planned evening together on the way home from work at 8.30, because there was a last minute rehearsal. I think I was justified in being not best pleased, you (and he) may not... Anyway, mini rant over. Hope your tooth is not as sore today, and that your day gets better. x Edited to add: And I've just looked at the thread title, and realised that this post has nothing whatsoever to do with Mumm-ra! Ah well...

"staying at home listening to their girlfriend's jealously bullshit" - hmm, being new to the board (only in name my dears, I have been watching you) I wonder if "Alfie" (if that is even his real name) is actually on a one man mission to alienate and insult those around him (note to self, when apologising for being insulting, always be insulting to someone else). Good job internet postings aren't viewable by everyone with access to the internet or he may find angry guitar widows lying in wait...

Aw stop it you lot! I was talking to Marcus really, and he would know what i mean. We were in the band together, and god knows how many times a certain girlfriend of "the singer" (let's be politically correct and not mention his name online) made him feel guilty and tried to stop him doing his music as much as she could. THAT'S what i meant, it was a direct referral to THAT time and THAT experience we all witnessed. That's it really. It wasn't a "general" and "universal" insinuation, but just a personally experienced one!

Foolish moi - it was probably the reference to "their" girlfriends that threw everyone. Nice one about the political correctness - I for one have no idea who you are talking about from that description. Quite pleased not to be a guitar widow though - sounds unpleasant.

You're entitled to your opinion and I'm entitled to mine, but given that the internet is the most public forum in the history of ever, I'm not sure that this is the most appropriate place to discuss it. Tell us about your holiday! (Maybe in another thread, as we seem to have thread-jacked the Mumm-ra one quite comprehensively...)

Back to Mumm-Ra: Michael reckoned (via text) that the 'Ra had written a country-song some time ago, under the Rumiko influence. 'Without You' may well be that song - it's a great tune, and they've only recorded it in Rumiko's style, they've not actually stolen any tunes or lyrics! You'll like it, really.

I thinks it's great! Good luck to 'em. BTW Caroline (whilst your in the bath and I can get on the computer) I think the main relationship/band difficulties stems from the fact that whilst it's quite easy to arrange an evening out with your partner, getting four or five people turning up to the same place at the same time (especially the Rumiko Jr) is no mean feat. If you have a gig coming up and haven't rehearsed for some time (as in your example above), sometimes you need to put rehearsals above a night out with your other half. I don't want to get into the business of weighing moral responsibilities but to keep a band going requires a commitment that, whilst not in the same league as the kind one has with one's partner, is made to several other individuals. It's also worth keeping in mind that bands like Rumiko Jr that have (more or less) kept together over several years with little observable reward fill an important function in the lives of those who put themselves through the hassle (i.e. carrying heavy amps, unsociable hours, pissed off partners, financial loss, etc), it makes us happy! Worth considering in any relationship.
