Ok! It's a shame Danny Boyle & Alex Garland got 'Sunshine' to the cinemas earlier, 'cos this episode was at least as much of a '2001'/'Solaris'(well, I've seen the Soderbergh remake) vehicle as the recent film. Wasn't convinced by Michelle Collins really, though it didn't help that the audience didn't meet her love-interest until after he'd been possessed... And there was me thinking '42' was a Douglas Adams nod (Reverse the digits = '24' , a-ha!) [Nb: I've got the VHS of the old, unfinished & unscreened Tom Baker serial 'Shada', written by Adams - along with another video featuring behind-the-scenes Super-8 film from the location-shoot - in which The Doctor is called to help locate a mysterious book accidentaly borrowed by an Undergraduate Student from a Professor at Cambridge University... This story subsequently formed the basis of Adams' novel 'Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency', my copy of which also ironically went missing some years ago.]
By the way, I re-watched the 1st three episodes of this season of 'Doctor Who' (all that I managed to tape) the other night, in the belief that I'd missed some obvious linking-references. 'Mr Saxon' aside, I'm still in the dark. Although Anne Reid's character in the 1st episode had some curious things to say, not least her use of the phrase "Burn With Me" whilst operating the Hospital's scanning equipment...
Anyhoo, I grabbed a dvd copy of 'The Claws Of Axos' earlier today (Dungeness! Dungeness! What A Mess! What A Mess!) so am off to my room to wind-down with that now.

The general consensus on this weekend's episode (well, from texts from Lee and Sophie) is that it was the best one either this year, or just about ever. I think I agree with that! My favourite part was actually the sound-design early on in the episode, where the boys' choir can be heard singing 'To Be A Pilgrim', and the dialogue pauses to reveal a big hint in one of the lines of the hymn.

And did people get the in-joke of 'John Smith's' parents' being Sydney (Newman, BBC Head Of Drama in 1963) and Verity (Lambert, original series Producer), ie the 'creators' (among others) of the actual series Doctor Who?

I'm fairly obtuse when it comes to spotting stuff like that, so hadn't noticed that, or the hymn bit... Truly you are the King of the Dr Who spods!

Worth re-watching it on Digital on Friday then, that hymn bit is pretty smartly done. We tried to see it at Carolyn's on Sunday (as she's not watched it yet), but their digibox wouldn't tune-in, again 'cos of the weather...

Oh gawd, my Mum handed me my birthday present while I was over there this afternoon, and it's another week until my birthday! And I know that the parcel contains at least one Doctor Who dvd... I'm at such a loose end this afternoon, perhaps I could just take a little peek...

Day 1/7. Got distracted by Big Brother. The parcel remains undisturbed.
Can everyone make an attempt to video this Saturday's Doctor Who for me, please? I've got social obligations.

LOL. You snotty middle class GIT. Don't describe your parents cooking a birthday meal for you as 'social obligations'.
Stu kept his hands off the parcel only by texting me constantly throughout BB, readers.

Thanks, but that's not the social obligation I'm referring to! Tune-in on Sunday to find out what it was.
Texting Petra (and Carolyn, who didn't receive them 'til the next day, and Carrie, who didn't respond) during Big Brother certainly helped me not to tear off the corner of my birthday present. You did send a lot of texts back too!
Day 2/7. Didn't watch Big Brother, watched old Dr Who dvd instead. Also moved parcel further along the shelf so it was out of my eyeline. Still undisturbed!

I can almost always be relied upon to want to talk about Big Brother, that's true.

stu-my phone was off, if it had been on, i would not have spent precious pennies on responding, i may have joined mikes screaming on here. do you want presents on sunday?(if you're quizzing)

If I was still on pay-as-you-go I wouldn't have started any Big Brother text-conversations either! Hopefully we'll be back from Throbbing Gristle in plenty of time for the FILO quiz, but you needn't make any rush to give me a present on Sunday in case we don't make it down. It's up to you if & when you give me a present, I'll be happy to make it to the FILO either way!

Day 3/7. Big Brother, The Friday Night Project (...is rubbish) and two-thirds of a bottle of red wine kept me away from my presents once again. Fortunately, I've got so much to do over the weekend, I'll barely be at home, so I reckon I'll reach Wednesday with Birthday-suprises intact, yay! Although I'm now fighting the urge to pop down Old & Gold in my lunch-hour to see what Doctor Who dvds may have been left behind... Is anyone taping it tonight then?

I think it might be down to my parents or Michael & Caroline then... Any of whom would be able to back-up my claim that I'm not missing it because I'm having a birthday-tea prepared for myself. If I was having a birthday-treat this evening, it would certainly include actually sitting down and watching Doctor Who with the family!

We can't timer record on our video, so I'm gonna set it recording when we leave the house, and hope that the video's long enough to catch it.
As a back-up plan, though, I'll ask my brother to record it, so hopefully we'll catch it one way or t'other...

Just had a slightly heated conversation with the boy regarding the relative merits of companion love interest versus non-companion love interest...I was slighty resentful of Jessica Whatserchuff (Hynes, according to IMDB, Stevenson to the rest of us...) throughout, although apparently that's because I have no soul. Or something.
(Stu- you have the option of a slightly fuzzy copy tomorrow, cos we forgot to put the digibox on before we set it to record, or a better copy later in the week, when I see my folks...)

Aaanyway- came across a comment on a blog that I read which pretty much sums up my feelings regarding the Matron character (despite thinking that Jessica...um...Hynes is great): "...I'm trying to imagine how well a racist, patronising character who's in love with an aspect of the Doctor that he can never recover would work. Not very well, I'm thinking." Yeah. What he (or she) said. And now back to work.

I haven't gone into Old & Gold after all; and I've still not disturbed my presents as I've had a busy weekend at our Uncle's suprise 60th birthday meal (day 4/7), the Throbbing Gristle recording session & FILO quiz (day 5/7), and an evening drinking wine and watching Big Brother (day 6/7). Just got to get through today! Unless she objects, I'll endeavour to re-watch last Saturday's 'Doctor Who' at Carolyn's in Brighton tomorrow sometime too. Thanks for taping it, Caroline.

It just gets better! Has anyone noticed some links between what the Plasmavore said in the first episode when she died; the possessed crew members whose spaceship was falling into that sun; the musical number that was performed in 30's Manhattan; the posters in the video shop window; etc etc?
I balanced out the great 'Blink' episode by watching some of the ropiest old Doctor Who ever made... 'The Space Museum' anyone?

Yay! Captain Jack returns, and that's not even the best thing in it! We should hold-off some plot-spoiling until anyone who didn't see tonight's episode gets a chance to catch-up, but I'm certainly gonna forgoe 'TISWAS - The Reunion' tonight in favour of my new videos of 'Terror Of The Autons', 'The Mind Of Evil', 'Colony In Space' and 'The Time Monster'...
