no more mickey. although after doctor who confidential there would appear to be lots of pictures of him posing and pouting with an ice gun should anyone need them in the doctor who magazine. we didn't get to hear most of this weeks episode because barney talked through it, all the way, so if anyone recorded it, can i borrow?

Carolyn's dad was gonna tape it: she may be able to bring it over before Dean's Revolver gig tomorrow... Only duff bit about Doctor Who was the unmotivated cliche of Roger Lloyd-Pack's henchman turning on him. Good fun anyway. Mickey'll be back!

Unmotivated?!! The bastard had been friends with him for years and then planned to convert him into a Cyberman too! Chock fulla cliches but probably the most fun episode we've had yet from Mr Tennant and co. Although next week looks suitably creepy.....

Oh, was that it? Saturday was very much my drinking-too-much day at Camber, so I probably didn't take in the plot as well as I would've done if I was at home with a cup of tea and a pizza... my heart!

Stu - do you want me to bring that video anyway tomorrow? My dad managed to record the repeat on bbc3 (having missed the start on bbc1 due to fucking about with the slot - again). Bless him - haven't had the heart to say I watched it at the time. Happy to rewatch though as was also pissed. Just remember the sound effects really.

Ker-chung, Ker-chung, Ker-chung, Ker-chung!
Nah, I've got enough memory in my head of what it was about to not feel that I missed anything particularly vital. Will wait 'til the dvd box-set comes out, and someone else buys it!
I am a cyber drinker...

On a rhyming note, I've just been to see Bela Emerson playing at the Poor Boys Cafe, Queens Road, Hastings: it's a great little venue! As I said via text, I can't read any more Radio Times previews of Doctor Who, as this week's issue seemed to give away the whole plot in advance, grrr.

I was hoping that episode would be a lot more dark & smoggy, but then I've never researched what the weather was actually like on Coronation Day, and I'm sure Mark Gatiss did. Still, some good bits, especially the screaming faces on the TVs in the shop (though the faceless-heads things has been done before in many other shows: eg The Twilight Zone, Sapphire & Steel, and Doctor Who itself, I think). My predictions for the end of the series are something like Derek Acorah inadvertantly opens up a gateway to the parallel Universe, allowing all manner of baddies & goodies back into 'our' reality, possibly using next week's black hole. Rose's family are reunited across the dimensions. The Doctor names a spaceship the Madame De Pompadour, without realising it's that same spaceship. The Torchwood Institute/computer database explains away the whole 'The Doctor'/'Doctor Who' difference in terms. Feel free to debate this idea ONLY IF you've not been browsing unofficial fan websites for plot giveaways! And next Saturday's episode looks proper scary. And I'm not gonna look at the bloody Radio Times this week!

I think that if I were a kid now there would be just enough scary stuff going on it for me. Faceless people are always a winner.
The rumour is that David Tennant is leaving at the end of this season, apparently they want a different Dr each year. Next years Dr will be colourfully portrayed by lovable cockney rapscallion Shane Richie. His assistant will be a feisty lesbian mother of four, played by Bella Emberg. Next seasons surprise classic monster return - The Macra terror. ('Oooh Dr, look at the huge crab!).

If anyone taped yesterday's brilliant episode, can I have a quick borrow of it? We missed the very first scene in the TARDIS (according to my parents). Ta. x

Saw it again yesterday on Linda's handy NTL service. No TARDIS scene - I don't think you missed anything!

Hmm, my parents must've got confused! I'm still ploughing through the excellent Lost In Time dvd set Lee got me: apparently there's a couple of Easter Eggs on there, but I can't bloody find them (I'm usually good at seeking these things out). 60's Doctor Who, though: when it's good it's very good, when it's bad it's terrible!

The Cybermen walking through Space in 'Wheel in Space' being my favourite 'shite' moment. And Patrick Troughton's incredible performance as 'Salamander' - crap and offensive at the same time!

Ah, not made it that far yet: but I thought The Moonbase had a desolate, eerie quality to it, very similar in feel to the current story in fact (though the episode climax of a Cyberman hiding...under a blanket! was a bit lame); whereas The Underwater Menace has been generally the worst (again, a few good set-pieces though). This is what the Internet is for, of course, criticising TV prgrammes from 1966...

I know how much you hate spoilers for the episodes Stu but this tantalising little snippet appeared in a magazine preview for the Satan Pit on Saturday - 'There's action aplenty, but the biggest thing about the epsiode may well be a few words which could have a huge bearing on this series or the next. You'll know them when you hear them!' Looking forward to that!

I'm certainly intending on getting off the West Hill in time for this tomorrow anyway. The Enemy Of The World was (Salamander aside) really well written (as were any of the bits on the dvd with a David Whitaker writing-credit, I noticed), many interesting minor characters & dialogue: and it's a lot better if you see it as a prediction of Rupert Murdoch's empire!

Guff? That was one of the best monsters I've seen in Dr Who for ages...plus the fact its leading us up to a very unhappy ending for this series. Mind you...for some reason the Guardian seem to be leading the charge of 'this series is shit compared to last year' which I'm finding a little bit hard to reason with. I'm finding it on a par really, when its good (the last two episodes, 'Tooth and Claw', 'School Reunion', 'Age of Steel') its very bloody good, when its not ('New Earth', 'The Idiot Lantern') its still very watchable. There were far worse episodes last year ('Rose','Fathers Day' and 'Aliens of London'). As for unsuitable for children? I hope every kid has a chance in their lives to be scared by Dr Who - its part of growing up.

Well, it's on at 7pm most weeks, which is the time-slot for older kids: any younger kids watching it would be doing so at parental discretion (that would be the BBC's general thinking anyway). A few people we know are taping the episodes before deciding whether to watch them with their children too. Don't under-estimate the kids! I'm suprised Petra didn't enjoy it, but no-one's obliged to think it's good. Pushes all our buttons though.

Have to agree- saw it this evening via the wonders of Freeview (as we were up on the East Hill last night), and thought it was fan-fucking-tastic!
Regarding the unsuitable for kids aspect, have had this conversation before, and have come to the conclusion (based on my own and my brother's experiences, and those of my friends with kids), that what scares children is not necessarily what you would expect to scare them (i.e. big scary red demon creatures, or faceless Londoners), but other, supposedly non-scary aspects of the programme.
I agree with Lee on the being scared by Dr Who thing- by the time you're old enough to know that you're supposed to be scared by the monsters, you're old enough to cope with it.
I could be talking out of my arse, however- anyone fancy lending me their children for an evening of research? Nightmare on Elm Street and Alien should do it...! ;D
Btw- Alien reference in this weekend's episode- spot on!

Ooh, think I blinked & missed the Alien reference (or I forgot it afterwards); there were however also at least three references to old Doctor Who stories (all Jon Pertwee: The Daemons, The Three Doctors, Frontier In Space) for people like us who got far too into Doctor Who when we were younger! Lee: I think you're in a minority of one in disliking Father's Day (which, in real life, is next Sunday: don't forget!) By the way, Carrie's post from May 20th: did you mean 'an ice gun' or did you actually mistype 'a nice gun'? I have swaps of no's 92 & 111 in the Doctor Who sticker album. Did a bit of Googling to locate the two Easter Eggs on the Lost In Time dvd. As a result, I've in a roundabout way discovered how well-informed the writers at www.dvdtimes.co.uk are: definitely should be your first port of call in dvd-buying decisions! For example, do a search there for their review of The Two Doctors (mid-80's Colin Baker/Patrick Troughton story) - this is a site with an impressively thorough approach to it's subject...

Thanks Lee but I asked a friend from work to record it. I watched it last night - only to find the tape runs out 10 mins before the end. Very frustrating. Luckily Stu was able to re-enact (over the phone) to conclusion of the episode for me - thanks!

My telephone re-enactments of Dr Who will be available as bonus commentaries on the new season dvd box-set, of course. Along with a shadow-puppetry Easter Egg. Later!

an ice gun hopefully! barney nearly hid behind the sofa on saturday, but standing behing said sofa watching whilst proudly proclaiming 'i'm hiding behind toms sofa' doesn't quite cut it. he was on this occasion more scared by doctor falling down a big hole than the monster in the hole or anything else.

Falling - a pretty basic fear, then, and proving Caroline's earlier point quite nicely.
Here's a quick aside about missing episodes (again): I was scrolling through older Doctor Who news on the BBC site last night (it was a quiet evening, and I had the house to myself *), and found a story from last year about some fans chancing across some undiscovered clips from Power Of The Daleks on... a BBC2 arts documentary being broadcast that evening. It actually took them 'phoning the BBC to point out that the clips that had just been shown were not known to be in existence by... the BBC. You know how it is when you work somewhere (particularly somewhere large) and one department doesn't know what the other is doing? Same situation, I guess. Anyway: they're too late to appear on the dvd Lee gave me, but can be watched online (only a few seconds long anyway).
