What a great weekend. De La Soul were really great. Such a good atmosphere - everyone was enjoying themselves. We kinda missed Hercules and Love Affair as I was coming back from De La Soul and hadn't realised HALA would be so prompt. However, what I did hear I wasn't too keen on - too Jazzy. But I think Stu liked it. Then we stuck around for the New York Disco - which was fun and let to me having many dreams of gay men. Saturday's Eurovision BBQ was fun (more fun then the facebook photos may lead people to believe). I liked the UK entry (for a euorvision song) and I think we wos robbed. As were Spain and France. Sunday I went to the festival fringe finale which despite being a cabaret was actually quite fun. Followed by a disco with way too much Amy Winehouse.

That New York disco was really great - I guess the DJ was a Hercules&LoveAffair associate. He had a leather cap on, and it was a pleasure to hear proper New York disco records in the context that they were intended for. And I'd never heard the extended version of 'Funky Town' before, yay!
The Long Goodbye at The Providence was unfortunate, in that the band played well, but everything else about the gig (venue, compere, audience) was rubbish.
Queering The Pitch turned out to be a 2 day event, and I got the line-up wrong for the day I went to. But Britch & Oliva's duets were astounding, and bode extremely well for their forthcoming collaborative musical (yes, really)...
And I drank too much, of course!

Anyone fancy coming to this?
"Following the success of THE EDICT and repeated requests on having another event of similar proportions and style, the Underground Surrealist Movement of St Leonards is proud to announce its second surrealist gathering. As ever we are determined to break new ground and unlock creative boundaries! We need the energy and the imagination of everyone to ensure another unique experience. This event will be held both outdoors and indoors. It will be a Plush Productions Ltd /Alt Media co-production event led by Barbara Parise Browton and Peter Stonham. OUTDOORS - The Magic Garden of delight St Leonards Gardens 6pm- 9pm Alice in Wonderland Theme - Tea in the park It will be a visual spectacle. Think Alice in Wonderland Themed park, with a tea party celebration of the creativity of Lewis Carroll's pioneering interpretation of magic realism later to become Surrealism and the parallel realities of Edward Lear, Frank Baum, Douglas Adams. The Challenge is to be part of this theatre in the park, which will become a living stage for the occasion. We seek the characters of this magic theatre, strolling minstrels and the creators of set and scenery for it. Bring to life Alice, The Mad Hatter, The White Rabbit, Owl And The Pussycat and The Wizard Of Oz. Create weird creatures and images. We are arranging suitable illuminations. Artists are invited to create the stage set for this experience. Here is the chance to put your artistic talent to a large scale. We need characters and a surrealist environment. We are planning electric and natural candle light illumination to enhance the visual feast, all of which can be incorporated in the artworks, i.e. lights inside creations like animals (swans, etc; )Remember we have a lake. Register your interest. INDOORS- THE MULTIPLE WORLD OF SOUNDS AND FEELINGS The next stage of the event will be held at the ASSEMBLY ROOMS from 9pm to 1am ( 3 rooms plus main room/Alexander Functions Suite and Entrance Hall.) The indoors will be more of AURAL/ Kinaesthetic/ Tactile experience. Employing creative materials: foam, bubbles, gel, fabric strips, ribbons, furniture, props/objects etc; Here the Challenge is to stimulate through the use of sound, touch and other tactile experiences. As well as the way you look, the spectacle will involve an interactive and explorative environment. We are interested in any ideas for the sound zone and other uses of space to create a multiplicity of delights. We are circulating this initial announcement to our friends and collaborators who made our previous event such a success and fun, and others who have expressed an interest in The Challenge. Please feel free to pass our message on. Please apply your creative energies to all or any of the following surrealist challenges: - Tactile Installations - Kinaesthetic experience - Theatrical scenery - Props - Lighting - Sound - Impromptu intervention in music and/ or performance - Projections We need a multiplicity of your contributions to make this a genuine shared experience! As before this is a self-funded project on a microbudget, which has been applied to secure the venue and pay for set up costs, and a small amount is allocated for materials needed by artists to make their works. We look forward to your response."

Is anyone else coming on sunday? I know it's a school night but it finishes at 11 and the bands are well worth it, especially those guys Two Fingers of Firewater...they are amazing, very Burrito Bros, and they have a steel player.

We have some important gigs coming up next weekend so we'd appreciate if you could come and support us, and tell us what you think of the new line up:
FRIDAY 20: THE STAR MUSIC VENUE - Guilford
SATURDAY 21: SECRET GIG BUT NOT THAT SECRET, message us for details
SUNDAY 22: JOOGLEBERRY PLAYHOUSE - Brighton
TUESDAY 24: DSC @ THE TUP - Guilford
THURSDAY 26: DUKE OF NORFOLK - Brighton ( Acoustic )
If you would like us to keep you posted about gigs etc please send us an email and we will add you to our mailing list: thelonggoodbyeband@hotmail.co.uk
The album is doing well and we have had a lot of very good feedback. You can buy a copy from Rounder Records in Brighton, Horsham Music in Horsham, or message us for a copy sent to your address. If you buy it direct from us it's only £ 7!!! Also, if you don't live in the UK, you can buy a copy on ITunes, Amazon mp3, Napster, and all the major internet download sites. A big thank you goes to all of you that have purchased a copy...please encourage your friends to buy their own copy instead of burning yours so that we can afford to make another one. We are trying to get some money together to buy some better equipment to record.
Other good news include a tour of California lined up for October ( details to follow ) and many more shows coming up in the autumn...everything is a bit up in the air at the moment!!
However, we will start to record the new album soon, just in the process of choosing songs at the moment, and we are also doing one of stripped down acoustic material, with the vocals and guitar recorded live, and very few overdubs...two songs, "Walking around" and "Shiver and feel" have been done already and we are very pleased with the results.
Enjoy the summer ( or whatever this moody weather brings ) and hopefully see you all soon.....
The Long Goodbye xxx

For all of you going to the Hop Farm on sunday....do you think we should have a gathering point? Like say, meet to the left of the stage about half way up?

sounds cool alfie. do you know anyone who might be driving back to hastings (or nearby) that could fit tom and i in? Have you looked here, missy? www.liftshare.orgI got half-way through the process before realising that as I'm not actually going, registering myself as needing a lift might be a bit foolish...(NB- to save you looking, cos I already have, the Hop Farm postcode is TN12 6PY). Good luck!

thanks c, we registered last weekend. we have a backup plan (someone from work has said she doesn't mind driving up to collect us, we don't have a cringe icon, i feel really bad about it but have no intention of sitting around paddock wood until 5 in the morning). bit of a cock-up on the part of the organisers really, no extra trains (although there are coaches to london). was looking on ebay last week and so many tickets on there at about face value.

we hijacked paul phillips mini-bus (after much frantic phone-calling). it was great, apart from being pissed on for three hours. neil young was good, primal scream were awesome, supergrass were okay, rufus wainwright was irritating (even the rain clouds couldn't get away fast enough).

The best thing for me was to see everyone...great pre-Bobstock gathering. Neil was god, quite simply. His playing was unbelievable. I thought Rufus Wainwright was really good, if you like that sort of thing. Certainly, although it was a bit "cliche", it was perfect timing when he was in the middle of "Halleluja" and it stopped raining and the sun came up. What a great day.

Back to the 4 piece then. Are you guys coming? I think i'll be up for getting pissed (after the gig of course)

Not us: I'd already been invited to the vaguely SOG-Related event tonight that I'd mentioned on the 'Eastbourne' thread - I'd just got the dates slightly wrong. So it's Chelsea Corner for us tonight. Hope Smugglers goes well though.
